I'm Excited to Be Dumb! And The Meaning of Friendship

Do you know what is better than spending the weekend away and coming home to find your husband cleaned the house and has a new appreciation for all that you do? Absolutely nothing.  Having the honor of being  a part of Dumb Mom's NEW and IMPROVED ifriends. So please, go check out her newest brain child. We are both talking about keeping it real. Her commentary on my guest post is hilarious. I wish I could be as dumb fabulous and witty as she is.

If you happen to be here from Dumb Mom's blog, and you want to see what my writing is like when it is not accompanied by Dumb Mom's commentary, click HERE. Because the fabulous post below was not written by me.

This month, I have been a part of Friends You Love, a diverse group of 15 bloggers who have been celebrating International Women's Friendship Month. I love getting to know new people.  On Mondays, we encouraged you to pick someone who follows your blog but isn't the most regular of commenters and ask them to guest post for you.

FriendsYouLove

For my final choice for this blog hop, I picked royalty. Going out with a bang, you know. I asked The Empress, aka Alexandra from Good Day, Regular People. Though we do read each other's blogs, I'm not breaking the rules of the hop by having her guest post because she's not a regular on here. How dare she have better things to do than comment on every single post I ever write. But, like Dumb Mom, she's incredibly witty and I knew she would write something about friendship that would make you think. Plus, I get the feeling that she doesn't like me and I wanted to prove that I'm not an evil witch like I feel like she has been led to believe.

When Shell so graciously asked me if I'd like to write a guest post on friendship, I jumped at the opportunity. Friendship is a subject that is so very important in my life. "Yes!" I replied with way too much eagerness, "yes!"

"This will fly off my fingertips," is what I thought. "I won't be able to stop typing."

And, then, when I sat down to write, I sat. Just that. No words would come. There were too many fighting to be on the page. I sat, with my notebook open, my pen still, and wondered how I could capture all the feelings I have down about friendship, in one post.

What do I cover first? The story on how friendship has saved my life? Or do I talk about the kindness of a stranger that grew into a friendship? And I had to be sure to talk about how my friends can make me feel as young as a giggling teenage girl again.

The more I thought of what I had to be sure to cover, the less I was able to write.

Our English language is woefully inadequate and lacking when it comes to the definition and description of friendship.

There really are no words, there is only a mental image. The expression, "a picture is worth a thousand words," fits so aptly here. When you mention the word friendship to me, my mind is flooded with hundreds of smiling, beaming, radiant faces. I see my friends throughout my life. From when I was in kindergarten, to the most recent friends I've made here, when I began to blog.

It makes me think, is friendship a word, or is it an emotion?

It surely is a precious thing, for at the times I've been without it in my life, my days have never been darker, or heavier. Friendship means so much to me, that I value it, and esteem it, and appreciate the blessings that I have in my friends. I do not take knowing them for granted, for I know the richness of having a friend placed in my life.

If I were to write of the many, many times in my life, that my friends have come to my side, this post would have no ending. And, still, when I'd hit Publish, I'd yet remember another story that I neglected to mention.

I've had valleys in my life, where I've had no hand to hold, no arm placed around my shoulder, no ear to listen, hear, and understand. Times when I've not been able to lessen my pain, and halve my burden, by the gift of sharing it.

A friend will make the difference in your day, make things feel not quite as heavy and impossible anymore.

A friend will multiply your joy at good news, and rejoice with you when happy things are to be shared.

A friend will beam with pride at your accomplishments, and share the joy they feel at knowing you, with others.

And is there anything more delicious than laughter to the point of tears, with a good friend?

A friend is an ear, a heart, a hand. They will help you cross that bridge you need to cross: be it good or bad. They will help you carry what you need help carrying. Whatever it may be: work, family, changes, anything you may need their help with. They will get you to the other side.

One of the truest adages I read on friendship struck me to the core, because it feels so true, is the following, "In life, a friend feels so instantly familiar because they have already been chosen for you."

Thank you, to my friends, and thank you, for the gift of friendship I've had in my life. I hope I've been there as your lifesaver, as you have been for me. You save me every day. I've lived life without you before, and though it took a long while to find you, you were so worth the wait. Because since having spent time without you, I now feel the sweetness of the time spent with you.

Thank you, Shell, for giving me the space here, to think about something so very important and precious in my life: friendship.

Ironically, Alexandra just wrote a post about guest posting, so please show her that this was worth her time. Nothing worse than hearing crickets. So, please leave a comment and go visit her, too. A-hem, same goes for my guest post over at Dumb Mom. *hint, hint, obnoxious begging*

FYL: Mommy's Still Fabulous

FriendsYouLove

Welcome to our third Friends You Love Blog Hop!

This month is about building friendships and making our existing friendships stronger...

We challenge you to dig into your "followers" list and find a follower you don't know well (someone who doesn't comment regularly) and reach out to them and ask them to do a guest post on YOUR blog. Link up with your guest post and have your new friend (guest poster) link up as well!

We will be running this blog hop every Monday this month, so spread the word, spread the love, and darn it, go make some new friends!
For this week's guest poster, I picked someone that I wish I would have met. We were both at Bloggy Boot Camp in Baltimore back in March, but didn't get to meet. I still say I should have stood up on my chair and started yelling for people, but then again, there are some people who probably would have hidden from the crazy chick up on her chair.

Erica from Mommy's Still Fabulous - don't you just love the name of her blog?

This month is about building friendships and making our existing friendships stronger...

I admit it. Sometimes? I’m not a good friend.

I forget birthdays and anniversaries. I don’t call as much as I should, and I certainly don’t give as much as other people do.

And I pay for it. Because while I might be a social butterfly, and love to have a bevy of friends around me, I don’t have many good, close friends.

Oh, I have lots of girlfriends to call and chat with, or to share a cocktail with on a Friday night. But I don’t have many friend friends…

I don’t know if it’s because I didn’t have many girlfriends in high school, or I pushed people away when I was dealing with depression in college, but I don’t feel like I have a core group of girlfriends who would drop everything they were doing to save my ass in a pinch.
Sisters.

Don’t get me wrong; people like me are blessed.

I’m blessed to have friends that send me Hallmark hellos in the mail… just because.

I’m blessed to have a circle of girlfriends who are always up for sushi.

I’m blessed to have girls I can call for advice about things I wouldn’t necessarily put out there in the Internet.

I’m blessed to have girlfriends with whom I can laugh over a bottle of wine.

I’m blessed to have girlfriends who tell me not to stress… and they mean it.

I’m blessed to have a husband who supports me and really is my one, true Bestie.

But sometimes, you need a girlfriend.

You need someone you know you can call at 2 am in tears, and not feel guilty about it.

You need someone you can have over for coffee, even if you’re not wearing a bra.

You need someone you can share your deepest darkest secrets with – even if you would never tell your husband the same thing.

You need someone to talk you out of chopping off all your hair.

You need someone to help you fix it when you do.

You need someone who won’t judge, even if you’re shouting in hysterics just to be heard.

You need someone who thinks like you and knows where you’re coming from.

You need someone who can hear you say, “I feel fat” and know you’re not really talking about your thighs.

And I don’t really have that.

So I keep a lot inside.
I run.
I write.
I laugh.
I clean.
I work.
I am my own voice of reason.
I am my own best friend.
And I’ve spent a lot of time building me and making me stronger.

I love honest posts. She really is fabulous.

I hope that you will visit her blog, along with others that are linked up. The blog you land on might be new to you or their guest will be new to you or both! It's all about making new friends!

I have a guest post up in the hop, too: HERE

Please note that this is not a follow you/follow me blog hop. While you are welcome and encouraged to follow the blogs participating and their guest posters as this is about making new friends, you need to have participated in this by either hosting a guest poster or being a guest poster.  Please do not link up if you have not participated.

Friends You Love Blog Hop: My Roomie-to-be

FriendsYouLove

Welcome to our second Friends You Love Blog Hop!

When I was trying to find someone to guest post for me this week, I thought I KNOW! I'll ask my roomie for Type A Mom. While we "know" each other already, I thought it would be a good way to bribe her to be my friend so she doesn't ditch me to be all by myself at the conference  to get to know each other better.

Amethyst writes the blog Life, Music & Laughter: Life With a Soundtrack.  Since I relate all major events in my life to songs, I definitely love how she adds song lyrics to her posts.

So, when Shell asked me to guest post for her, I was like "OMG! YES!" I was so honored because Shell is so freakin' cool! Then I read the rules about the blog hop and realized she was asking me because I'm like that weird kid that's always staring at the cool kids and doesn't really say anything, so, her asking me was like "either say something, or go away you freak!" So, here I am! talking with the cool kids! And, in public!

And now, the pressure is on to say something really cool, so, you can't tell what a big nerd I am, and I might actually get invited to one of the cool kid parties. Which reminds me of the time in High School that my friend and I planned a little party.

I've always had lots of friends, but I've never actually felt like I fit in in any one group. I'm kind of a friendship nomad wandering from friend to friend stopping off for awhile, but never really having that one place to call home; no one to call and say "oh my gosh, guess what happened?!" and no one calling me to say "wanna go shopping?" I don't have that one girl that I do absolutely everything with, the one that just gets me.

So, I was in High School, and my nomadic ways had taken me to being friends with a girl in my Orchestra class (see, told ya, total nerd, here.) Her parents were going out of town, so we planned a small party of 10-15 people. I told my mom I was spending the night, "of course her parents are going to be there, Mom."
Word of our party spread like wildfire, and next thing you know there's beer, boys, cheerleaders, wrestlers, and a foot through a television screen! This was totally out of control, but we were the cool girls hosting this awesome party! Everyone was gonna wanna hang with us! Finally, I would fit in!

Then, because all good things must come to an end...

One of the boys had answered the phone, and it was my mom on the other end. With drunken brilliance he told me "it's okay, I told her I was your boyfriend!"

"What?! You did what?!"

Next thing I know, my mother is at the house yelling at everyone to get out because she had called the cops.
I don't know about you, but I just don't think there is any way to retain coolness when you're being dragged to the car by your mom while you cry how it wasn't your fault! Nope, no chance of being cool after that incident!

Of course, that was High School, thankfully, who you are in school doesn't stay with you in the real world. I'm much more confident than I was then. I'm still a nerd, but I'm okay with just being me; that tattooed music loving, frugal shopping, little bit weird, mother, wife, magazine junkie, pirate girl. And, while I still don't have that one bestie girl to call on, and I still sometimes don't feel like I fit in, I have a lot of people to call friend; and that's pretty damn cool!

I hope that you will go meet Amethyst! And visit some of the linkers- maybe the blog you hop to will be a new one to you or maybe their guest will be! It's all about making new friends!

One Year Later....

It was a year ago this week that I entered the blogworld.

Well, sort of. This blog was around a little longer than that. But, it was just my online journal where I would write when I felt like it- which sometimes meant weeks or a month or two would go by between posts.

I didn't read other blogs, I didn't know about following- didn't have the follower gadget on mine. Didn't know about blog communities, memes, buttons, any of it. And what? You can do PR on your blog? No clue. I just typed faster than I could hand write and usually misplaced journals, so I just wrote on here, for me.

But, then, last August, I started reading some blogs. And thought, hmmm, look at the comments- what fun to actually have a conversation through a blog. Maybe I could try this.

So, on September 9th, 2009, I joined in my first meme. You can see that post HERE. Yes, it's totally Shell-esque.

Not having a clue and having so many people who were so helpful, teaching me how to do things on my blog and around the blog world. Offering help without me having to ask or jumping into help when I asked for help. I've been doing my best to pay this forward with other blog newbies.

And since then, I have met so many people. Found women that I relate to instantly. And some whom I've gotten to know over time.  And some whom I only know a little bit, but who have touched my life through sharing their stories.

You listen to my stories and I listen to yours.

I'll read a comment and think yes! Look at that, someone completely understands what I'm saying!

It goes beyond just blogs and into email conversations so long that gmail eventually starts the message over in a new one because it has exceeded their limit.

To tweeting, bbm'ing, texting.

Phone calls. Even though I hate the phone.

And meeting some of you in person.

Through this blog, I've met people who I know I can turn to when I need to vent, or cry, or sometimes even flat-out bitch when I need to. You offer me advice, agree with me on some things or help me to see the other side of an issue.

I feel like I have an online family.  When I talk about you, I don't say "this girl whose blog I read," I say "my friend."

I never guessed any of this when I took that first hesitant step off my own little space and into the blogworld.

Never.

It's these friendships- ones that have been around for a while- like some of the girls who commented on that very first post and we still read each others' blogs- to ones that we have met along the way and formed a connection with- to ones that we have just met recently- we are celebrating these friendships(along with your IRL friends, too, of course) during Women's Friendship Month.

One of the Friends You Love girls, Kristen at Only Parent Chronicles, is having a Blogoversary Bash for her blog next Wednesday, September 15th. A twitter party from 9-10:30 EST. Sponsored by Eden Fantasys- there are SO many prizes that it has to be an hour and a half to get to all of them! You can RSVP HERE.

Besties Photo Contest

Do you want to know something awful? Even though my bestie has been in my life for 29 years, the most recent pic I have of the two of us together is from our senior prom. OMG. The fashion mistakes...mine, at least. Yes, that pic is somewhere on my blog. I'm kind of hormonal today and not up to the mortification of posting that particular picture right now.

But, it did get me thinking that it's kind of pitiful that the most recent pic I have of the two of us together is over 15 years old! We really have to fix that!

Do you have a pic of you and your bestie that you'd like to share? Maybe it's recent, maybe it's like mine and not-so-recent. But, it should be a pic of the two of you that you love! Share it with us and enter our contest!

Friends You Love Blog Hop: Ice Cream for the Soul

FriendsYouLove

Welcome to our first Friends You Love Blog Hop!

I wasn't sure who to ask for this first week of the FYL Blog Hop. After all, I wasn't supposed to ask the people who first pop into my mind when I think about needing a guest poster. You know, the people who comment all the time, whose blogs I read every single day, whom I feel like I know really well.

So, I turned to twitter and thought of who I sometimes tweet with, but maybe we are not each other's blog regulars. And that made me think of Debi aka @truthfulmommy who blogs at The TRUTH About Motherhood.  She is doing a Be a Better Me(You) challenge right now that is definitely worth checking out. Having moved around quite a bit myself, I definitely relate to her guest post today.

It seems that I learned one of life’s most important lessons from my preschooler. Last fall, my then 4 year old used to come home everyday chanting the phrase, "Mommy, to have a good friend, you've got to be a good friend!" I thought it was cute. It sounded blissfully simplistic; almost childish but the more I thought about it, it was one of the truest facts of life. I listened, actually took the advice to heart, and examined some of my own relationships.

This simple phrase made me conclude that you get out of a relationship what you put in and if you are not, if the friendship is unrequited, then it’s time to end the relationship. Don’t expect more out of a friendship then you are willing to put into it. As one of my closest friends once told me in reference to having a real friend, " It's like coming home." It is the feeling of being safe and secure to be you and be accepted and loved unconditionally. That is what I want out of a friendship. It’s what I am willing to give and what I expect in return. I am not one for superficial friendships; I do not have the time or energy to play that game at this point in my life. If I call you my friend, I genuinely think of you as my friend, as my family.

Last year, my husband lost his job and I had to leave everything and everyone I knew behind. This deeply saddened me because I had finally made two close friends after 4 years of living in that city. I hated to leave them because as a busy adult with children it is a remarkable feat to develop a real friendship, if not impossible. Nevertheless, I had to go. I was afraid of no support system. I thought for sure the friends I left behind were going to forget about me and once again, I would have to start all over.

When we first arrived in Virginia, I was new and knew absolutely no one. To my surprise, the women I met there would prove to be some of the most wonderful and genuine women I will probably ever meet. They invited me into their lives, their hearts, and their families. They were supportive and amazing. They made me feel like I was at home, even though I was hundreds of miles from where my "family" and friends lived. I had never experienced anything like this before in my life. Who knew you could form such true friendships and quick bonds with other women in such a short amount of time, especially as an adult. We left Virginia without a job but much richer people. I left with a heavy heart, and I miss these women and their amazing spirits. We may be geographically apart but they will always be in my heart. They took me in, extended friendship and sisterhood, when they did not even know me. It wasn't for any reason other than to be kind to another human, but they will never know how much that kindness meant to me at that time and will always mean to me. I miss our talks, long walks, saying hi in the hallways, sharing our children’s firsts in life, our laughter, prayers, the cocktails when we needed to decompress, but most of all I will miss their sisterhood.

They taught me about real friendship and inspired me to be a better friend. I just hope I can spend my life living up to the standard that these ladies have set. It was a hard if not very valuable life lesson to learn. Friendships are vital and can make or break you. If all Mommies, women, could have the kind of bond that nurtured and supported one another like my friends in Virginia did for me...the world would be a better place. Just remember, as my 4 year old once told me, "To have a good friend, you've got to be a good friend!"

Thanks to Debi for stepping out and guest posting for me! I hope that some of you will go meet her!

Please visit some of the links below! Maybe the blog you go to will be a new one for you or maybe their guest poster will be. Show them some love and make new friends!

Friends You Love Giveaway: Mama Cards from Mabel's Labels

One of our wonderful sponors for Friends You Love Women's Friendship Month is Mabel's Labels.  I've worked with them before and their labels adorn all of my children's school supplies this year.

Aside from the labels and bag tags that they offer, they also have stationary products like Mama Cards ™.

I saw these and thought they would be perfect for Women's Friendship Month. I don't know how many times I've been at the park or the beach and started talking to another mom while our children were playing together and thought it would be nice if we could get together again.

How convenient would it be if I had my own Mama Cards ™ to hand to another mom! Plus, it would give the illusion that I'm ultra-organized and put-together...even though I'm really not!

There are five different designs and you choose the wording. I am getting a set of these(thanks, Mabel's Labels!) and wanted my name, "Mom to:" (my three boys), my phone number, and my email address on them.

But, pssssssst, even though these are called Mama Cards ™ , you can come up with your own use for them and still use them even if you aren't a mom!

One of you will win your own set of Mama Cards ™! 100 cards, $29 value, your pick of design and wording, open to US and Canada.  This giveaway will close at 9pm EST on September 12th.

More on Friends You Love and a Little Plea!

First of all- can you pretty please do me a tiny little favor that will take only seconds? There is a contest going on right now for a Type A Mom conference ticket. I'm going and really don't know anyone who is going. No one that I can say "Oh, I'll be fine and not be the awkward girl in the corner with no one to talk to."

But, you can help that not be me! My friend Ashley is one of 6 people in the running for a free ticket. But, she's not winning right now! OH NO!!!!! Could you please go HERE and click to vote for @anothermomof2?

Later today, BFF will go up. I've really enjoyed sharing my Blog Friend Features with you. When I pick someone for this, I think of a fabulous blog that I read...but also one who is more of a regular commenter here, too. A friend of sorts. And it's been a way for you to meet a new friend and for them to meet you...

But, even though I'm going to continue that, I'm also trying something new along with the other ladies of Friends You Love and we want you to play along, too!

FriendsYouLove

This month is about building friendships and making our existing friendships stronger...

We challenge you to dig into your "followers" list and find a follower you don't know well (someone who doesn't comment regularly) and reach out to them and ask them to do a guest post on YOUR blog. Then, come back on Monday, link up with your guest post and have your new friend (guest poster) link up as well!

We will be running this blog hop every Monday this month, so spread the word, spread the love, and darn it, go make some new friends!

Do You have the World's Greatest BFF?

A best friend.
Friend Quote Pictures, Images and Photos

Do you have one?

Someone who you can tell everything to?

And I do mean everything.

The stupid things that you've done, the times you've really messed up- even the times you really messed up but aren't really even sorry about.

Your secret hopes and fears that you think anyone else would roll their eyes at if you told them.

Who would never tell anyone your secrets.

Someone you can safely have an emotional breakdown in front of, or call sobbing on the telephone and she listens.
Friend Quote Pictures, Images and Photos

Who doesn't judge and usually ends up making you feel better and laugh, no matter what is going on.

Someone who you know will be there anytime you need her and will tell you to shush when you feel bad about having to ask for any kind of help(like watching all three of your kids on short notice when she has two of her own). Because she's your best friend, so of course she will help you out.

A best friend who you could just drop by her house without notice(until you move 600 miles away).
Friend Quote Pictures, Images and Photos

A best friend who gets you.

Who knows when you are being sarcastic or serious without you having to tell her.

Who knows what your insecurities are and will always stick up for you.

Who knows the real you.
Friend Quote and Cute Quote Pictures, Images and Photos

A best friend who will always be there, without a doubt.

Pour Your Heart Out: A Glass of Friendship

If you need more info about Pour Your Heart Out, see THIS post.

But, really, it's anything that YOU consider pouring your heart out.

Be sure to check out some of the links- you will find some amazing stories out there.
Again, just a brief reminder that everyone linking is pouring their hearts out and we should all be respectful in our comments. ;)

I don't make friends easily. I've mentioned that in passing a few times. Being the incredibly supportive women(mostly women anyway) that you are, you have given me reasons why you don't believe that.

But, like I told you in this post, I have had problems making female friends. Mostly, it stems from not ever having that sort of clique mentality, where you like or dislike someone based on what a group thinks- instead, I like who I like and dislike who I dislike- all based on my own reasons. In the land of junior high, that didn't fly. And there are those who have never left that mentality behind.

When I make a friend, I'm fiercely loyal. Because those friends mean the world to me. My friend Angie and I have been friends since we were four and I know that I can always count on her and tell her anything. And there's Supah whom I've known since our four year-olds were infants that we pushed in strollers around the zoo as we chased our toddlers- who is one of the most big-hearted and real friends you can find.

And then there are the friends that I've made through blogging. Some that I have had a chance to meet, some that I will meet someday, and some that I probably will never meet....but all feel like real friends. After all, I can tell you things here on my blog that I might have a hard time telling someone IRL. Because I'm so open here- can you imagine sitting down beside someone on a bench at the playground and just spilling all this? I would seem like a crazy person. But, in the blogworld, that is what we do. We share ourselves. I especially love the Pour Your Heart Out posts that you link up because it lets me see more of who you are when you share such personal things. And if you hop around and visit the links, you'll make friends, too.

That sharing we do on blogs...it makes me realize that blog friends are real. And mine are so diverse.  Some whose experiences I relate to and some whose experiences are incredibly different from mine. Yet, we connect.

And, whether I've ever met them IRL or not, I know that I can count on my friends. We get to know each other by reading each other's blogs. We email, tweet, bbm, facebook, etc, as we get to know each other better. And can cry out for help and have that cry be answered. Maybe it's prayers, support, opinions, suggestions, someone to celebrate a victory with us or even just someone to listen.

We need those connections. Our friends are so important.

And that's why I'm so excited to be a part of a very diverse group of bloggers who are working together for the month of September to celebrate National Women's Friendship Month- which is being expanded this year to be International Women's Friendship Month.  The intent of this month is to honor our friendships.

All month long, we will be hosting events, contests, reviews, giveaways, and Twitter parties all in the name of friendship!  You can check out Friends You Love to meet the other bloggers who are a part of putting this event together. We'll be posting more details of our events there in the coming days. I hope that you will participate in some of our upcoming events and celebrate friendship with us!
