Movie Mondays: I Never Agree with the Critics

I was actually able to see TWO movies recently, in the theater. We tend to wait for dvds a lot. Trying to find a sitter is sometimes more of a hassle than it's worth.  Plus, there's the whole not-able-to-stay-awake factor. So, this is a little rare for me!

Messy Mommy just started a new blog carnival last week called "Movie Monday," so this gives me a chance to talk about the movies and tell you why the critics are wrong! If you've watched a movie lately(in the theater, on dvd, or even just on tv) and want to talk about it, click the button below and link up!

Movie Monday @ Messy Mommy

Whether it's books or movies, anytime the critics are raving about something, I tend to get let down by it. But, when they don't like something, I tend to like it. Especially if the reason they don't like it is because it wasn't "deep" enough.

Pbbbbbfffffftttttttt.

I don't need deep.

I just want to enjoy myself.

*The Valentine's Day review does not contain spoilers, though the Dear John review does.*

Hubs and I saw Valentine's Day on Valentine's Day. Awwwwww. That's when I busted my knees by performing my cartoon-like fall.

The critics basically hated this movie. Poor script, tacky comedy, date movie from hell, quantity of actors instead of quality: these were all reviews that I read.

But, do you know what? This movie was FUN. It was cute, sweet, and funny.

I did get a big kick out of a line that Taylor Lautner's character said at one point: "I don't feel comfortable taking off my shirt in public."  I laughed and then felt a little dirty, thinking about how I drooled over him in New Moon, back when he wasn't even legal. I didn't know that then: I'm too young to be a cougar!

The relationship with the "old couple" was my favorite plotline. I just love the scene with them near the end, in the graveyard(yes, I said graveyard) and the speech about how loving someone means you love all of them, not just the good parts. It fits perfectly with my view on marriage.

Even Hubs liked this movie. He doesn't get into the deep and sappy crap, so this was cute. Plus, the last line of the movie made the whole theater laugh, sending us out the door in high spirits. I don't want to spoil it for you, though. But, if you ask me, I'll tell you.

You know how you'll flip through the channels, looking for something to watch and there will be a movie on that you've seen a million times, but you always stop to watch it anyway? Valentine's Day will become one of those movies for me.

The other movie I saw was Dear John. I'm a huge Nicholas Sparks stalker fan. Though, this was probably my least favorite books of his. I kind of went off about why in this post, but I'll give you the short version of why, since I know it's a pain to go back and read an old post to get caught up.

So, I just copied and pasted my main problem with the book:
Here's my problem with Dear John: at the end, you are left with a couple who is married(Savannah and Tim). The wife loves her husband, but it's more a marriage that just happened due to circumstance and not because she actually is IN love with him. She's IN love with her ex(John) and still thinks about him, wishing things had happened differently. Her husband, who just went through a bout of cancer from which he almost didn't make it, is well aware that his wife would choose to be with her ex if she wasn't so set on honoring her marriage vows, but her heart is really else where. And then there's the ex, who is still in love with the girl that he can never have.

Tragic all around, right?

You always expect changes from the book to the movie. But, the ones that were made this time around left me with an unsettled feeling. Maybe even more unsettled than the book...but it's pretty much a toss up.

I could dissect this for the-longest-post-ever, talking about the changes made from book to movie, but I'll just tell you about the two most important ones.

The biggest change was just plain creepy. Savannah still marries Tim, but Tim is OLD. Like, old enough to be her dad. He is sick before they get married and pretty much pressures her into marrying him so that she will take care of his autistic son(in the book, this child is his brother; Tim doesn't get sick until after they are married; and he's only a few years older than her). People in the theater were visibly shuddering when they found out whom she married. Some even called out "That's NASTY!"

Then, there's the big change in the ending. In the book, John sells his father's coin collection and uses the money to pay for Tim's experimental treatment and it saves Tim's life.

But, in the movie, the treatment gives him a couple more months to live, to come home and say goodbye to his son. Then, he dies. Savannah writes a letter to John, professing her eternal love, and they exchange a kiss at the end.

A friend of mine told me that she liked the movie better than the book because the movie gives you the happy ending that you want. But, is that really a happy ending? I don't know how you could take the plotline of the book/movie and actually come up with an ending that does sit well with me.

I did still cry at parts, because I'm a giant sap like that. And watching Channing Tatum without his shirt on didn't hurt, either. He's legal, right? Phew.

In my opinion, see Valentine's Day and be prepared to have an uneasy feeling if you see Dear John.

Anyone see these movies? What did you think?

I saw Valentine's Day this weekend and loved it. But I like Chick Flicks...and Love Actually is one of my all time favorites...so I thought it was interesting how many similarities there were to the Love Actually movie.

I agree with you...it will be one I will stumble upon and stop and watch. It was fun! AND stay for the out takes during the credits. Julia Roberts has a hilarious one!

haven't seen either! i would like to see v-day b/c it seems like it's right up my alley! not creepy, gross, scary or thought provoking! just nice sweet sappy stories. kind of like love actually!

I havent seen either of them yet - but did you know that Julia Roberts got paid $500,000 PER MINUTE (all 6 of them) for being in Valentines Day? We were talking about that at work the other day! That's insane! That's more a MINUTE that I will make in the next 9 years!!

I liked Valentine's Day. You did a good review of that movie. I also felt like I was seeing it for entertainment, not to see if it would win an award. I hate the paid reviewers.

I haven't seen Dear John, and I'm not sure I want to, just because I'm a huge sap and I'll cry and I hate to cry. ;-)

I want to see Valentine's Day. Actually, I may go this weekend! A movie doesn't have to be critically great sometimes, does it? It just needs some eye/mind candy once in a while~

Ok, Dear John sounds just creepy, and I do want to see Valentines Day - have to force, er, cajole the fiance to go.

Also behind on movies, just saw Avatar...

Good review, keep em coming!

I don't need "deep" either, I just want to sit back and be entertained without having to think too hard about it. Lol!
I will have to see Valentines day.
I don't know about Dear John it wasn't one of my favorite of Sparks books either. I didn't read the changes made in the movie though, just in case...

I was a little worried about V-Day because when they put so many stars in a movie it usually backfires.. hmmm maybe I will see it now. Dear John looked lame, but since their is an Autistic Character in it, I may just see it for that reason alone, even though the movie sucks!

I have not been to the movies since 1995...just kidding seems like it though!

I always wonder about movies where they put so many great actors all in one...I can see where the critics probably thought it was bad...I very rarely agree with the critics though being that one of my all time favorite movies is The Ugly Truth and Ferris Buellers day off!

I always get so angry at movies and books where the couple doesn't end up together...it pisses me off, but I think I still want to see Dear John.

Funny! I have a post half written about this same thing! I lOVED this movie but it reminded me a little me too much a "my first love" and can't quite finish the post and make it sound right. I have been trying for about 5 days :) and um YES Channing is hot. I don't even like many "stars" and get into their looks but he was my exception..my hubby could tell and asked if I thought he was hot. haha :)

I'm really excited that you are doing these. Usually my movie advice comes from the teenagers that I teach and while I generally agree with their assessments...sometimes they lead me astray.

I will say they gave exactly the same critique of Dear John and encouraged me NOT to see it.

I'm waiting for the Valentine movie on DVD. We haven't been to a movie theater in ages! I often have the same experience with the critics - maybe when they talk things up it makes me have unrealistic expectations.

I'm not a big movie goer anymore (too busy blogging!!!), but since about the early 1960s any movie made, based on a book I liked, disappointed me. The movie generally screws up the book so badly that it is hardly recognizable as the same story!

Thanks for participating! Hubby actually wanted to see Valentine's Day and I said no because I heard it was stupid. I didn't read the last half of your post because I haven't seen Dear John yet. But I agree, the ending of the book was slightly depressing! I hope to see it soon!

We're bad about getting fat off of pizza and watching it on DVD, but I did want to see Valentines Day. Unfortunately, it never worked out :( I don't really have any interest in seeing Dear John. I'm not into really sad movies...I can't handle it...lol

I have long sense decided that the critics never know what they are talking about. They are horrible. Sometimes they're right, but most of the time...they're just idiots.

I want to see both those movies, but looks like I'll be waiting for PPV (pay per view). I love Nicholas Spark's, but I'm a sucker for a happy ending. I did not like how Nights in Rothane ending. I wish they'd make a movie of "The Wedding".

I LOOOOOOOOOOOVED Valentines Day! my bf was outta town so I saw it with one of my single girlfriends ON Valentines Day! It was great! Cute, funny, a little mushy but not over the top. (i can't wait to make the bf watch it when it comes out on DVD!)
Anyway - the line you mentioned - about loving all of them... I literally picked up my phone in the movie and typed it into my notepad! I LOVE that line! it's awesome!

I ALSO saw Dear John - went BY MYSELF on saturday night before v-day...
I cried through the entire movie.. and then it gets to the end and I was literally like WTH?!! didn't like the end at all - and you're right - it's just down right "unsettling"
It's not one I would watch again. too creepy weird. (but your right about Channing Tatum... wheeeeeeeeew!!!!!)

I love comedy type chick flicks so I will definitely see V-Day. Plus, I just love to look at little Taylor Lautner. *sigh*

I love me some Channing Tatum too, but I think I'll pass on Dear John. I am the biggest sap in the world and would bawl like the little girl I am, but the whole plot, book and otherwise doesn't sit well with me either.

Great reviews Shell!

Like you I am a HUGE Nicholas Sparks fan/freak/stalker :) I feel the same that the book is definitely my least favorite of his. I hated how old they made Tim in the movie! Yuck!
PS- Have you seen the previews for the newest book that he wrote - The Last Song? It's already being made into a movie. I think it's going to be great!

i haven't seen either movie... i figured i'd wait until they came out on dvd. to be completely honest, i only wanted to see dear john because of channing tatum. i'm not really drawn to the whole love story thing, for some reason. and channing's most definitely legal :) i think he's 30, maybe?? but he's married to his co-star in that dance movie, step up or whatever it's called :(

i have when movies divert soooo much from the story of the book. it's irritating.

I haven't seen either one and I doubt that I will. We don't get out much and Hubs is very picky about what movies he will go see. It's hard for us to agree on one so we end up at home on our respective computers.

I loved VD - now I can't remember the last line and it's bugging me...??? It was a FUN movie and made me laugh and smile all the way through. Plus I am a sucker for Ashton - he is SO FRICKIN' CUTE.

I'm not a Sparks fan by nature, so I'll probably never see that one. The other, however, might get Netflixed.

Valentine's Day seems to have Love, Actually qualities. True or false?

I haven't seen either. Neither is quite up my ally, but I might give one a shot should I be feeling adventurous.

Or sorry for myself.

Either way, I liked the reviews!
