Slowing It Down

Bedtime around here is usually a really rushed time.  It's been almost a year since any of my boys had a daily nap.  With summer here and my boys with me all day, their quick go-to-bed routine is probably more for my benefit than theirs: so I can have quiet to work or read or watch tv or have a glass of wine.

They always fall asleep quickly, so they must be ready for bedtime, too.

But, one night last week, I put aside all that I needed or wanted to do that didn't involve my kids.  My youngest cuddled on my lap while my two oldest actually shared the couch peacefully.

I ran my fingers through my baby's hair, knowing that he's now old enough that he'll be headed to preschool in just a few weeks.

I looked over at my big boys: one headed to first grade and one to kindergarten.  All day long they will be gone.

And while the snarky side of me wants to rejoice in all the peace and quiet I will have, the reality is that I will miss them.

So, I let the clock slide way past their normal bedtimes.

And when my youngest's eyes were starting to close, I took him to his room, got him settled in, and laid beside him until he drifted off.  No quick tuck in, kiss goodnight, and bolt out the door that night.  Instead, I watched his eyelashes flutter against his cheeks that are losing their baby roundness and realized how quickly time passes.

Back downstairs, my big boys were insisting they were watching the movie on the screen, when I could see that they weren't going to last much longer.

But, for once, I didn't push it and insist they head to bed.  Because what was the harm? What was my rush?

It was a sweet, quiet moment.

Soon, I could hear by their slow, even breaths that they were fast asleep.

And I realized that sometimes, this mama needs to chill out and stop trying to rush everything.

My oldest does not go to bed easily, and some nights I want to scream, so I have to remind myself to just take a deep breath and be thankful that she wants to cuddle with me for hours before falling asleep. There will be a day that she's 14 and won't want to breath the same air. That always calms me down a bit.

This is a lovely moment.

Jellybean woke up at 11:30 last night wanting to play. Instead of griping about needing sleep - I got down on the floor with him, played and read a book. I know that all too quickly he'll no longer be a snuggly little boy and I'm going to what every single of those moments back!

This was so incredibly sweet. Sometimes I watch my baby boy sleeping. He's 18 now, but every now and then I can still see the little kid in him. They really do grow up so very fast. Enjoy these precious moments whenever you can.

Lovely reflection! Some of my best moments with my daughter are times when I've put aside everything to focus on the fun moment with her; I find I enjoy our time more without the pressure I often (very reasonably in the day to day grind) put on the experience. There is nothing like that quiet cuddly time!

Good for you!!! Bedtime is so tough. I want to keep them up to see them longer after work, but they are grouchy and I need to get laundry/dishes/etc. done, so I also long for the day when I can give them a hug and a kiss and send them upstairs without further monitoring. But I know I will miss the endless - one more story, one more drink, just snuggle for one more minute, Mommy - times.

This is precious. I told Nikki not to long ago that a big regret of mine was not slowing down to have more memories like this when her and Kelly were small. Let the dishes sat in the sink, floors go unswept and clothes not get folded right away to spend time because in a minute those moments will be gone. They grow up way to fast.

I used to spend naptimes working but now that it's gone and the nap isn't guaranteed I just let him sleep on me while I snuggle him. I take time to chill out with hima nd it has become a favorite part of my day.

Oh, so true.

My husband was gone the other night, so I decided to bring one of the babies in to sleep with me. Emily slept with us last, so I brought Drew in. Long story short, he tossed and turned, didn't want to snuggle, and finally I just put him back in his crib. And then I cried. My baby didn't want to snuggle.

Thankfully, he was back to his cuddly self for a nap on Sunday. I promised myself to nap and snuggle whenever he's in the mood before he outgrows me all together.

S-l-o-w it way down :-)

The Girl stopped napping before she was 2. And I make sure she gets to bed at 8, or shortly after, otherwise she's a nightmare the next day. Of course, that doesn't stop someone else of the adult variety in the house to not care when they get to bed and keeps them out running errands past bedtime. The Boy insists on a nap every day, and he's been 2 for a month now.

Also, I think we have the same couch. Freaky.
