Valentine's Day, Our Way

Hubs and I have never really celebrated Valentine's Day.

Our first one together, we were trying to keep our relationship quiet. We worked at the same school(his only year in the school system, it was enough for him) and the last thing I wanted was rumors flying. It's hard enough to command respect when you are a 24 year-old who looks about 16. I didn't want everyone to know any details of my personal life.

To his credit, he did make a reservation at a fabulous restaurant and told me to get all dressed up.

But, then, I freaked out when he told me where we were going, since I thought that showing up there would mean that news would spread like wildfire in our little town and everyone would know.

So, we ended up not really doing anything.

Poor Hubs. I told him that he looked like someone strangled his puppy.

We still say that to each other, if the other is looking really bummed out: Who strangled your puppy?

Anyway, our second Valentines' Day together, it was less than a month until our wedding, so we didn't want to spend a ton of money. We went out to eat, but sat in the bar area, since no one else wants to do that on Valentine's Day.

That's pretty much been it. We'll go out, maybe, but no big deal. I always tell him that he better not get me flowers since they are all over-priced for the holiday. And I actually mean it.

We always say it's because our anniversary is coming and we'd rather celebrate that.

THAT is our day.

One year, when Monkey was 14months old and I was gigantically pregnant with Cub, I had just moved to PA while Hubs was still in NC. I moved earlier so that I could get settled in with our new place and find an ob and Hubs came about 6 weeks later, after he finished up work.

That year, he sent me gorgeous flowers(which was okay since we didn't get to see each other) AND TWO POUNDS OF CHOCOLATE-COVERED STRAWBERRIES.

Is it bad that that is probably my favorite Valentine's Day memory?

Those strawberries were awesome! (Anderson's, for anyone from the 'burgh who happens to be reading- they are the BEST)

Last year, we bought a Wii Fit as our present to each other. Though, really, it was just that we were actually able to get our hands on one in January and needed a way to justify it.

This year, we're buying P90x.

Nothing says "Happy Valentine's Day, sweetie, I love you" like a workout program designed to get rid of your fat.

But, that's how we are.

We know we love each other.

We do celebrate and get all mushy...but we save that for our anniversary.

How do you celebrate?

Well....if Hubs wanted to bring home those chocolate covered strawberries, I wouldn't refuse!! But I'd also probably think...why did he spend the $$$...and oh Lordie...I need to get to the gym! LOL!!! Thanks for stopping by my blog today!! Don't you just love SITS and the chance to get to visit other bloggers?!?!

I cannot wait to hear how the P90X is!! We don't really celebrate either. We usually just make a nice dinner and get each other cards and that is about it. Our babysitter is engaged now so that pretty much kills any hope we had of actually going out to eat on Valentine's day! Oh well.

Those strawberries sound amazing!

I hear ya about celebrating your anniversary rather than V Day. That's how DH and I are! We go out to dinner sometimes to celebrate Feb. 14th but just spending time together is enough. TWO POUNDS OF STRAWBERRIES? Yum.

I like that you buy one present together and it is for both of you.

That's way less pressure than trying to buy something awesome RIGHT after Christmas.

This way, you buy something super-awesome and you both love it.

You have much knowledge.

We're not v-day people either, and I totally hear you on the flowers. I just don't see the point. I wouldn't turn my head at chocolate, though!

I like the P90X idea. We're actually in the middle of Power90 and planning to jump to P90X on March 1. Can't wait to hear how it goes for you!

Not much here. Luckily, my hubs is the kind of guy who brings home flowers on random Tuesday nights, so we pretty much boycott V-D.

It has taken a more special meaning now that the boys make valentines cards for their "sweetheart" (me!) at school. That's the best.

Though chocolate covered strawberries sound pretty awesome too. Well done hubs.

If hubby is home (and not deployed or some other crazy army thing), we just hang out at home. Flowers, chocolate, babysitters--all are overpriced on VDay. He does let me pick a chick flick to watch though...his little attempt at romance :)

I would much rather get flowers for no good reason than on Valentine's Day, honestly. It's such an overcommercialized bunch of bunk if you ask me. We sometimes go out to eat, but we don't do candy, flowers, expensive stuff.

February 8, 2010 at 11:09 AM

that didn't sound right--I mean I would much rather be surprised by flowers on an ordinary day--just because---than to get them on V Day. Does that m ake more sense?!?!!? hope so!

yummm - i love chocolate covered strawberries. We don't really do anything exciting, sometimes we will go out to dinner but no where too fancy. I also tell him no flowers - i would rather have $100 to buy that new bag I have been wanting than on some roses that are going to die. What is the P90x?? -- i need to make myself not fat too...

Hi! Found your blog via a short trail from The Kitchen Witch to Momalom to Drama for Mama (how's that for a fun journey over coffee?). Am enjoying myself hugely at your place!

How do we celebrate Valentine's Day? Well, the one coming up will be the first in years that we'll have had together. We were in a long-distance relationship for 8 out of the last 11 years (not consecutively, but that didn't make it much better). We got engaged five years ago last Friday. That's "our" day now. I also tell my husband not to buy flowers because of the ridiculous markup :). We splurge on nice ingredients and cook up something we wouldn't ordinarily get to make.

Ahh that was really sweet actually! I love doing stuff for my kids on Valentines but the hubby and I just do the cards and maybe something little. I don't eat a lot of sweets but on Valentines I get my favorite Sees candy dark chocolates and he gets his Reese's Peanut butter heart and some funny boxers!

Shell - P90X is a lot of fun. It's great to do it as a couple. You can make out during rest breaks and stuff and still keep it romantic. (j/k - it's very sweaty). You know how people ask for "push presents" when they have babies? I asked for an elliptical. We are nothing if not practical.
and chocolate covered strawberries ROCK!

Oh man! Chocolate covered strawberries, I love em! We don't really do anything either. Granted we have a million kids under 5, but we can always find something else to spend our money on. Wait, are you saying that Valentine's day is this week? Yeah, that's about where Champ and I are with this holiday, but the feeling is totally mutual. Chocolate covered strawberries are my fave! 20 years off my life sentence (marital years LOL) and Valentine's Day has been pretty much on the down low for us. I'm with you.

The little one gets it all jazzed up because we always make a big deal for her...spoiled child...with love that is. She still gets the backpack shakedowns and police inspections on every other day...just kidding.

The hubby and I have our special time after she goes to bed with a glass of red wine and a movie...we are cheap...but love doesn't have to be expensive...but I do like flowers, diamonds, chocolates...OK, I'll settle for romantic quiet time!

We don't really do anything much on Valentine's Day either. Cards and a little bit of time together... seeing as how we just got through Christmas on 1Dec 25th, Our Anniversary is Jan 20th, my Birthday is Jan 23rd and I combine those 3 into one "bigger" gift of my choosing each year. We've spent enough by then and "TIME" is so precious, just spending it together is a lot. We do things for each other frequently all year anyway so that one day isn't 'the day' to show it. :)

On my husband's and my first Valentines's day, he sent me flowers at work. Only we weren't together yet. He was still working on winning my heart so his note simply said, "Every beautiful girl deserves flowers on Valentine's"
I think that Valentines's may have sucked without it.
These days we usually try to go out during the week or weekend of Valentine's and we keep it pretty laid back.

I love it!! Good details! I have a love-hate relationship with Valentine's day. I usually seem to be single, or dating a guy who thinks it's overrated and doesn't care what I think. Once or twice I had a romantic time, and then it's spoiled by the expectation of uber-excitement. Ya just can't win.
