What Doing a Detox Taught Me

Here I am. Day 8 of a 10 day detox.

And no, I haven't cheated.

Unlike Hubs, who is a dirty cheater.

Though, I guess I should be thankful that he is the type of dirty cheater who cheats with a beer and a basket of wings, and not some hoochie homewrecker.

SIGH.

For the past week, I have followed the plan created for me by Lisa at Whole Health Designs. I won this plan so I'm under no obligation to talk about it. But, since it has made such a huge difference this past week, I want to write about it and tell you what I've learned by going on this detox.

Oh, and for those of you who thought that being on a detox meant you just drank weird things like water with cayenne pepper, that isn't true. The type I was on involved actual food. I wouldn't last 10 minutes on a plan if I didn't still get to eat.  The food on my detox plan kept me full. It didn't stop the cravings for things that were bad for me, but if I was honest about how I was feeling, I was never hungry on this plan.

Being on this plan really showed me some of the incredibly bad habits I had fallen into. The ones that, combined with a lack of exercise over the last almost 4 months, made me want to cry when I stepped on a scale the day before this detox started.

These are not exactly earth-shattering revelations. But, I fell into bad habits and this detox was just the swift kick in the butt that I needed. Here's what I learned:

1. I was not drinking enough water. Not by a long shot. Unless I was at the beach or at zumba, I really wasn't drinking much at all.  But, with this detox, I made sure that I drank a big glass when I first woke up and kept my glass filled all day. This also helped in between meals when I usually would have grabbed a snack.

2.  I was using way too many convenience foods. With the boys in soccer 3 nights a week and Hubs often working late, it was easy to turn to the drive-thru or to grab some sort of meal from the freezer section of the grocery store. While those types of meals have their place, in the past week, I've been eating so much fresh produce and the meals did not take very long to make.

3.  I was adding way too many "extras" to my food. Y'all. I'm the type of person who thinks that the only reason you eat salad is so that you can eat the dressing. And when the dressing is done, you push the salad away. So, the idea of a salad without dressing?  BLECH. Whether it's dressing or cheese or butter, I was adding unnecessary calories to my foods before.

4. I was eating more than I thought I was.  When I'd go to get a snack for the boys or when I'd be making them a meal or when they didn't finish a meal or when I was simply passing through the kitchen, I was snacking.  I wasn't thinking about it because it wasn't a meal, right?

5.  I wasn't planning our meals. I used to be so good at menu planning. And then I failed in a big way. It was so much easier to eat healthy when the meals and snacks were all planned out for me.

6.  I was pretty much taking crap care of myself.  From not eating breakfast because I thought I was too busy getting the boys ready for school and then off to their respective schools to grabbing junk food and calling it a meal, I wasn't putting any effort into making sure that I ate well.

I actually do feel a lot better after being on this plan for a week. Aside from being cranky from the no wine rule.

Does this mean that come Thursday, I will only eat "healthy" and "clean?"

Um, no.

I've missed chocolate and wine and cheese and bread... SO VERY MUCH.

But, I am going to put more thought into my meals. I'm menu-planning and going to incorporate more fresh greens/veggies into our meals- and not add as much of the "extras."  I'm going to take the time to eat breakfast.  I'm going to continue drinking lots of water. And I'm realizing that I HAVE to take good care of myself so that I'm able to take care of my family. And so my jeans fit.

Btw, I also learned that there are waaaay too damn many commercials on tv for bad food. It's just cruel.

Oh, and? After I get through these last 3 days of the detox, I'm headed out of town to visit a friend and attend Bloggy Bootcamp. I reserve the right to eat and drink whatever the hell I feel like during that time. I have healthy foods planned for when I get back.

Have you ever tried a detox?

*UPDATE: I weighed myself the morning of day 9. 9 pounds lost, y'all!

Love this Shell! I've been unlearning bad habits lately, too.

(They're so damn easy to fall back into!)

But really eye opening to really focus in on!

Congratulations! I know you feel proud to do this. It's very hard. I keep telling myself that I'm going to shed these five blogging-bloating pounds then and I lose about three, and then a weekend comes, and I drink yummy Octoberfest, don't drink enough water, and I've got the water retention back.

Never tried Detox. What you are doing is reasonable - and I think I could follow that. I also do not drink enough water ( unless you count Diet Pepsi)

I have never done a detox but really need to. I have found myself so busy of taking care of everyone else that I don't have time for me at all. I have tons of exercise equipment here at my house and never get on it.. if I do I am so winded in minutes that it doesn't last long. I want to be here for my kids and grandkids.

Wow! It sounds like I need to try this. I have all of those same bad habits. I've just recently started trying to be more aware of what's IN the food we eat and that's helped some. Really cuts out a lot of the convenience stuff which is just sad 'cause I could use some convenience. =)

May I suggest a book called "Eat to Live" Dr. Joel Fuhrman. Maybe you won't become a Nutritarian but you sure will learn about food and their benefits. Really helps you to eat and plan better.

Good Luck.

Oh, do I ever hear you on the "crapcare of myself" part.

Guilty, guilty, guilty.

We need to take better care of ourselves.

And the carbs: so good but do I really need all the ones I take in?? No. But they're convenient , and they're always there.

A diet higher in Fruits and veggies results in a 70% less chance of Alzheimer's.

I fear Alzheimer's. My mother has it.

Some scary stuff.

So, I eat F and V's all day: just b/c of my fear.

My own personal detox is fear.

Good job, mama..and I hope you took the day off and went to the beach to show off that new bitchin' detoxed bod.

I've been a vegetarian for 5 years, but I tried a vegan detox for a week last year and I turned into the devil. It was so intense I broke out in hives! That said, I do think if everyone went vegetarian for one day a week they would notice health differences, and I don't mean a plate of pasta, but a plate of veggies. Like, a roasted squash with butter and brown sugar and a side of sauteed garlic kale. I have a gazillion recipes if you're ever interested. It's crazy how addicted our bodies get to certain foods.

Kudos on the detox!

I hate that it is so easy to pick up bad habits and so hard to pick up good habits. I have tried 2 detoxes (one liquid, one food) and both times I was in withdrawal like a drug addict. It was horrible. I didn't make it more than 2-3 days. I obviously am very, very toxic. I hope to try another but honestly ... so scared.

I LOVED reading this today first thing! I am so happy that you are doing so well with the detox and that you are feeling better. Sounds like it gave you a great jump start to get back on a healthier plan, which is what it did for me. Now I eat super clean about 85% of the time, but enjoy wine, chocolate, etc. on weekends if I want it.

Enjoy BBC this weekend!!

I am so proud of you. I can't go a day without a Diet Coke, or now my new favorite: Godiva Coffee. I tried one of those shake diets before but that is as close to a "cleanse" as I have been. Congrats on making it so far!

I've done a 3 day shake detox (3 shakes/day and one salad in the evening). You can do anything for 3 days so it wasn't much of a challenge. I dropped an easy 4 lbs, though and truly felt great.

I shortly, however, fell back into my bad habits. Wine and chocolate being my main temptations. Though I have ever since cooked better dinners for my family -- more veggies at every sitting and no frozen or processed foods. That is a change I can continue. I also make my own salad dressings which helps not as much with calories, but with all the gunk we just don't need in our bodies!

Great advice, and good for you for doing a detox.

When I was pregnant, I had glucose intolerance and had to see a dietician who taught me about portion control. Didn't realize I was over-eating. I think it is a common mistake/problem.

I don't know if I'd necessarily call it a "detox" but the past few weeks I've been doing a vegetarian (well, that part of my diet has been the same for 14 years), gluten/dairy-free diet. I've had some strange tummy issues so I just figured I would eliminate some of the trigger foods (which sadly also includes wine and caffeine). But I feel better, so I guess that means it's working!

And I dont know how anyone could do one of those honey/cayenne papper/tea diets. Sounds yuck to me, personally.

I've never done a detox and I don't think I could - not because of the cravings - but because I'm lazy!

I don't particularly crave unhealthy food (lucky me) but but but.

I simply do not know how to make delicious meals that are healthful (veggie-based etc.) And I don't particularly want to learn (see: lazy).

If I had a professional chef (like, say, Oprah?) I'd be SET! Until then, it's pasta baby. All night long.

These have been the sad but true confessions of a woman trapped in the cycle of spaghetti for dinner.

good job to you! I recently did a 'reset' of sorts, not necessarily a detox. clearing whites for a while (flour, sugar, pasta, etc.)...and even tho I drink a ton of water? Drinking even more. yep. more more more! Glad you're liking it, you rock lovah.

I happen to know a new blogger who has been meal planning for 3 years now. She's my BFF and her blog is called Mom Rocks Mealtime. She tries to choose recipes that are healthy and she posts pics and reviews of each meal. You should check her out!

Ha! My husband would be a cheater too. I think it's a husband thing.

Good for you, drinking more water and eating more whole and homemade foods.

:) You're almost there! Wine is in sight!

The food commercials at night are RIDICULOUS. 10 years ago a doctor was helping me lose weight and I mentioned all the commericals and she acted like she didn't know they existed. I could have slapped her skinny self.

Detox - Nope. Not my style.
I have aversion to things on the "diet" list, after a childhood of watching my mother yo-yo diet. I do need to do better with meal planning and try to expand my gals exposure to veggies.
Proud of you Shell!

You are my hero!! No wine? For 10 days??

I've never tried a detox before because I've only ever seen and read about the liquid detox diets and like you, I NEED to have food of some sort.

I need to try something and quick! Because what I see in the mirror when I get out of the shower...totally not working for me!

Good for you, Shell!! Nope, never tried a detox.
And I laughed very hard at that first paragraph about your husband being a dirty cheater ;)

Eat breakfast. Cut down on non-meal snacks. Adding in more fresh veggies <---those are pretty simple things that I could actually do.

And it would probably be good if I didn't repeat the popcorn/kit-kat "dinner" that I had tonight (true story).

When I read about your detox, I immediately thought of those liquid ones too. Clearly there needs to be more info out there (so thank you for this!) that it can be done with real food. That feels much less daunting.

I've never done a detox, but I was just telling my Mom and husband yesterday that I've gotten to where I just can't eat crap anymore. I hate the feeling after eating a super rich dessert or greasy food--it makes me feel like crap for three days. And even though I crave it, at some point you have to be like, "What's the point?"

You're making me want to try one! I've never done a detox, but I'm learning a lot of the same lessons. I was doing really well over the summer, but I see some of those bad habits creeping up now that we're busier. I don't want all my hard work to be in vain! I think I need something like this to give me a fresh take.

I haven't tried a detox, but have totally thought about it. Sounds like it is helping you make some great changes. I just read the book "Food Rules" by Michael Pollen and it makes a lot of sense and good arguments for why we shouldn't be eating all of the processed foods, etc. So, go you! Hope that you are able to maintain the healthy eating after the cleanse is over! And good luck with the menu planning. I actually like doing that, it makes me less stressed during the week.

Wow, girl, you are brave! I've always wanted to try one of these detoxes, but I haven't mustered up the courage. Yet. But I have been more conscious of the fact that I need to drink more water lately, so I bought a pretty water bottle to carry it in. Whatever works, eh? :)

I could not live without my Friday night wine, and of course, cheese...

The only thing I've done as a detox with 7 days on the 17 Day Diet. Yeah, there's a reason it was only 7 days long. Then it was right back to The Abs Diet where I'm allowed a cheat meal once a week and no restrictions as far as bread, dairy, etc.

Sounds like you did really well and got a lot out of the cleanse! It would be super hard for me to give up my wine for even 1 day, let alone 10!!

Amazing weight loss! I start weight watchers 2 weeks ago, I'm eating a lot better than I was, I've lost 3.6lbs so far. :) I so understand the convience foods, that is my problem, so I'm eating more at home with easy things to meet.

Holy moly! THAT'S BASICALLY TEN POUNDS! That's more than a pound a day of weight loss! Wow. I think I might look into this detox thing... I had to laugh at #3 - I do that too, why bother eating if there's no flavor? Every one of your other points (water, not taking better care of myself, always snacking) I'm guilty of! Ugh! Thankfully I'm back on the health wagon with Weight Watchers, but I have to admit, I'm not too happy about it! LOL!

Over the years I've done probably three to four detoxes...the worst one "for me" was The Wild Rose and as much as I hated to, by the end of Day 2 I had to give it up...and I hate quitting! But I'll tell you, if you have 'lil kids running around and being demanding, sitting on the toilet all dlay (with your ass on fire) just doesn't work. LoL...now that's graphic.

Congrats on sticking with it. I am so bad at drinking water these days. I'm going to get on that again ASAP..and add some fresh lemon!

Now, I might not have seen a recent picture of you, but I didn't know you had any weight to lose (you've always been very, very pretty and pretty damn skinny whenever we've seen a picture of you). With that said, I hate the feeling of not liking the body you're in.

Next, isn't it amazing how easily you can get into the habit of prepared foods and snacks?

While I admire you for this, and I know I'd benefit from the same, I'd never be able to give up wine & cheese & bread. Never. So I'll just run more :-)

Keep up the good work - and let us know how that first glass (oh, fuck it, bottle) of wine tasted.

I really need to try this. I snack way too much and was good when the kids were younger about eating whole, organic foods but since they have gotten older I rely on convenience food for all of us. And? I am a salt-aholic. Can you have salt with this detox?

I know I don't get enough water...except for when I Zumba. So that is def one I need to work on. Planning is another issue. But one thing you said is something that really has struck, "I was taking 'crap' care of me." And girl that is what I have been again! And my weight is slowly creeping back up. I can't have that. Back to ME I go. :)

Wow, 9.9 lbs. that is awesome! What a great accomplishment. I can't say that I have ever done a detox. I know that they are good for you (just like giving blood), but I would prefer just eating as clean as I can. There is a lot of junk in our healty foods as well though, so I am a advit gardener. Fresh is the best!
