Blog Friend Feature: One of the Funniest Bloggers Ever

So, I'm not very creative with my title this morning, but honestly, today's blog friend feature has a blog that keeps me laughing. No matter what she is blogging about, she always finds the humor. Not only that, but she occasionally makes these fabulous cartoons that I may have begged her to do for her post today...you know, if she felt like it.

Meet Helena of Life in the Pitts! Some of her recent posts that had me cracking up are If You Loved Me, You'd Change My Diaper and her take on follow hops. You'll get a good giggle, I promise.

I'm actually sort of tempted to set her and her husband up on a blind couple date with my younger brother and his wife, since they live in the same town and I think that they would have so much fun together except that I worry that that is a little weird and stalkerish and then I'd have to explain to my brother how I know her.... which is really fuuny, given what Helena wrote about in her guest post today!
Isn't she adorable?

Hi guys! I'm Helena.

When Shell asked me to be her BFF today, I got up and did a happy dance.

(Am I the only one who thinks of her as a celebrity?)

I've been a follower of Shell for forever (approximately), and she is so supportive. I'd say the only flaw in our relationship is the fact that I hate her.

Hate her? What?

Well, I guess the correct term for it would be "crippling jealousy."

It's not because she is fabulous (she is fabulous), or because she is nicer than I am (she is nicer than I am). Our relationship could handle that.

It's because she is anonymous.

No one in real life knows about her blog, and just thinking about that freedom is enough to make me want to smack her in the face.

...See? She is a much nicer person than I am.

I guess I'm really not mad at her. I'm mad at myself.

The benefits of blogging anonymously are obvious. You have freedom to write about anything. Your job. Your friends. Your mother in law. Change a few names, and you can say whatever you want, without censoring yourself.

Sounds like heaven, doesn't it?

But I didn't start anonymously. And at this point, I just can't give up my very-much-public blog. So in an attempt to get over my crazy jealous rage (and maybe save our friendship?), I am going to come up with a list of good things about blogging as yourself.

"..............."

Ok, there have to be a few. Hang on, I'll think of something....

....Ok I think I've got some.

This last one is my favorite. And also the scariest.

I like to blog about everything. From the time I peed on my best friends floor, to what I think about when I'm in bed with my husband.

Not really things I want my mother in law to read.

(but she does, and she does not approve)

It's hard not to censor yourself when you know that people at church are reading what you write.

But if you find your voice, and write from your heart, the honesty will shine through. And honesty is attractive. It will reach out to people that you know, and those you don't know, and when they learn more about you, they will learn about themselves.

Sometimes I cringe before hitting the publish button. Sometimes I think "there go all my followers," or maybe "there go all my friends."

But I do it anyway.

And those posts? The raw and honest ones, the embarrassingly funny ones, the ones that give some not-so-pleasant insights into my character flaws, and the way things work inside my head?

Those are my best posts.

They are the ones that people relate to more.

They are the ones that get noticed, and shared, and talked about.

And they are the ones that make your real-life friends (and old schoolmates, and church leaders, and everybody else who has been secretly reading your blog) look at you, and see you.

They stop seeing you on your best behavior. They stop seeing you when you are trying to be nice. They stop seeing you as that awkward teenager, or that quiet co-worker (not that you should let your coworkers read your blog. Ever), or that crazy, messy co-ed that you used to be. Instead, they see who you really are.

Maybe they will like you. Maybe they will hate you.

But they will see you.

And chances are, they will also see themselves.

My husband Kurt has had friends, classmates, and even old roommates tell him "My wife reads Helena's blog all the time." Sometimes they will tease him about posts that they've read themselves.

"So, Andrew, huh?"

He's getting used to it.

But I'm not.

#3 on my list really happens. It's intimidating meeting someone for the first time, and hearing them say "Oh my gosh, I read your blog!"

My smile freezes, and all I can think is "....Well shit. Now they're going to expect me to be funny in real life." (and I'm not. I'm mostly just awkward.)

But in the end, I am happy with my decision to blog publicly. Or rather, my decision to stick with it, even after I realized my mistake.

I chose to be real in spite of it. To be me. To let me flaws shine through, no matter how much I would rather play up the virtues.

Not to censor my voice, or pretend to be someone I'm not just because I'll have to look my friends (and mother in law) in the eye after they read what I write.

It's the best decision I have ever made.

(besides, you know, that whole getting married to Kurt thing)

I'm not saying that anonymous blogging isn't amazing, and freeing, and something you should totally do if you can (if I could do it over, I probably would). But I am saying that if you have a public blog, and you can't let go of it, embrace it and be you.

Don't let other people stifle your voice.

Please.

Please, leave Helena some comment love here! And then go visit her blog and follow if you don't already! I encourage you to check out one of the posts that I linked to or she linked to. She thinks that if you go to her home page, you will find her looking like the picture below, but we all have our days and I think you'd love her anyway, but those links will show you what you will find on a regular day on her blog.

Too funny! I think I'll still stay anonymous, though!

I agree, though, I have gotten to know one person who does know me in real life so much better through our blogs!

And we live close enough to Shell, that every once in awhile I threaten to throw that girl in the car (she doesn't drive) and take her to come visit Shell... which would make me non-anonymous... and a stalker, so we don't, but I threaten...

Great choice! Heading over to become a follower. =)

I blog publicly and sometimes wish I didn't. My blog link is in the signature of my email thingie, but I sometimes find myself deleting it, depending on who I'm messaging. I think my biggest hurdle is that I belong to a church that turns its nose up at MANY things but I don't wholly follow their doctrine. I'm sure all those little old ladies have prayed for me!

She is hilarious! And I so agree about wishing that my blog was not public! Especially to my family. There are so many things that I want to write about but I know that it wouldn't go over well with some people.

I am now going to have to spend all weekend reading her blog! And yes I think that Shell is absolutely fabulous!

I too often wish that I was anonymous. It would be so much easier. But I have gotten over it and I blog openly and honestly open anything and everything, even sex and my mom reads my stuff. Oh well.

Oh my gosh, where do I even start? Thanks you guys, I'm glad you like my post. I'm going to visit each and every one of you today, so don't be creeped out. You've been warned.

And Shell, that isn't weird- we would love to make some new IRL friends! But we would have to come up with a convincing cover story, to hide your blog...

So true... there are some great benefits...er... humiliations... I mean, benefits to writing as yourself.
I started annonymously, and then came out of the identity closet a year later.
Best of both worlds... already found my honest voice, and was able to keep it... I think. :)

I have always blogged privately. Never thought of inviting my family to my blog. I could never imagine my mother or mil reading it. They would turn the most innocent post into a devil's writing.

I commend those who can do it.

Too funny. I am semi-anonymous. My friends and family know about my blog but I keep my real name and other people's real names out of it. Going to subscribe to and follow Helena now!

Glad you featured her! I'm definitely going to head over to her blog and start following!!

If I could go back, I'd be completely anonymous, but I do embrace it as it is. I don't hold back, I spill it all and if the people in my real life don't like it.... oh well!!!

I absolutley LOVE this post! There are days I wish I had started anonymously. I also harbor jaelousy towards Shell for this. But, being me in spite of the public creepers, is pretty darn cool too! :) Thanks for this! I always hesitate in telling anyone about my blog to minimize creeping. I always get a little nervous when I pass the link along, and I never advertise on FB or anything b/c I'm sacred to. Some of my posts would be considered boring by creeping haters, but if they catch me on the right day...all *&#@ could break loose. LOL GREAT GREAT blogger!

Okay, so you're like the 3rd person who has mentioned this blogger in a blog post or a tweet so of course I have to go check her out! She sounds hysterical...you know I love humor!

It never even dawned on me to blog anonymously. And it does totally freak me out when people I know IRL say they read my blog. All I can do is think to myself, "Holy crap, I hope I didn't write anything bad about them..." Then I realize "Oh well...not my problem. It's MY blog, after all".
