BFF: They Really Do Hear All (Especially When You Don't Want Them To)

If you are here looking for the Back-to-School Celebration Giveaways, they are listed in my sidebar.

I have a problem with this week's BFF. You see, I'm always reading her posts at night and waking up my husband because I laugh so hard. Okay, so maybe the problem is that I need to wait until the morning to read her posts. So, it's my fault, not hers.

Jen, from Buried with Children has four children- with three of them being triplets. She writes with honesty about motherhood. She seems to find the funny or sensible in all situations. And occasionally is even sentimental. I love her take on motherhood- because she seems like such a practical, realistic, and funny mom.  Enjoy her post!

My triplets are now three years old and sometimes when I look at them, I can't believe that we have survived. There were times during those first few months that I thought it would be a miracle if they made it to the 6 month mark and Hayden made it to his third birthday.

Those first few months were ruled by the every three hour feeding schedule. And me being the stubborn person that I am, I had to figure out away to do care for all four of my four kids two and under by myself.

Let's just say that when I was feeding babies, Hayden at the ripe old age of 2 figured out very quickly, that I was unable to get up or do anything about his behavior. There was the time that he took apart all the vents in the house and the time that he painted our bathroom with chocolate pudding.

I tried do things to deter the mischief like reading to him while I was feeding babies but during the hour and half total it took me to feed each baby, there are only so many books a two year old can handle. So eventually, I just let him watch TV.

Whatever works, right.

During these early months, I must admit that I really looked forward to the weekends and weeknights when Jeff got home from work. Because then instead of taking one and half hours to feed that babies by myself, it would take 30 or 40 minutes. It was awesome and gave me more time to spend with Hayden.

But even though, Jeff was home and helping me feed babies, I still had to be in control. Blame it on the hour upon hour that I spent alone with the kids and oh yeah, the fact that I am their mothers.

We would sit across the room from each other and he would be feeding Quinn and I, Jake and I would say things like, “make sure you burp him, we don't want him to spit up” or “watch it, I think he is sucking air” or “I think you are holding him wrong, he looks uncomfortable.”

Jeff usually would just shoot me a look that would say, “Look lady, I can do this just as well as you can so shut it” but sometimes, he would open his mouth and say as nicely as he could through gritted teeth, “You feed your baby and I will feed mine.”

I would quickly realize my mistake and not say another word. Jeff's way was not my way but it was a good way.

Well one afternoon, this conversation came back to haunt me and teach me that when kids are watching TV their ears are still open.

I had set up Hayden with a snack and I sat down to do a feeding with Jake, Quinn and Claire, Hayden and I were talking back and forth when I asked him if he would share one of this fruit snacks with me?

Hayden let out an exasperated sigh, looked me right in the eyes and said, “Momma, just feed your baby.”

Now if only I could get him and his siblings to hear the things I want them to hear, I would be all set.

Please leave some comment love here for Jen and then go follow her blog if you don't already!

I had the same realization when my son was about 4 or 5. We were in the car and the stoplight changed to green. The car ahead of us wasn't going (probably talking on her cellphone) and Micah says, "Geez! Gimme a break!! What's taking so long, lady?"

Hmmm... wonder where he heard that?? Oops.

Off to see this amazing lady with triplets now ... I'm in awe. ;0)

OMGracious I love her! I'm heading over to check her out now.

Her story reminds me of when I was nursing The Girl as an infant and The Boy, who was 18 months was running around ON the couch across from me. Their dad came out and was like, "Um are you not going to say anything?" I responded, "Well, I can tell him now a gagillion times when I can't do anything to stop him, or I can wait until I'm finished here and can actually get him down to say No. In the meantime, I'm praying he doesn't fall and crack his head open!" The ex says, "good point" and went and got The Boy down. Score one for Mama! :)

I can't imagine triplets. It seems, you'd have to be a bit controlling, or totally care free (and let many strangers do it).

Hayden reminds me of my little one. Always has a comeback related to something he has hears in one of my conversation with his dad.

My 4 yr old daughter was playing Little Big Planet on the playstation with my hubby the other day when she said, "That pisses me off." It took a minute for the comment to register with me what she said. She just kept saying it too! I asked where she heard it & she told me. She heard ME say that daddy pisses me off.
Out of the mouths of babes!
They're always listening.

LOL Hayden. Oh that beautiful selective hearing - bites you in the fanny every single time.

Good for Jeff for sticking to it. I harped on Hubs so much he gave up - and I found myself trapped under a baby for over a year.

That'll learn me ;-)

I can feel you getting ready to exhale - just wait until they're four!

Tripets and another little boy on your hands - my goodness! You have my utmost respect. I know what you mean about wanting things done a certain way. I know in the beginning I used to have to remind myself to let go a little too.

Oh, I can sooo relate! I have 3 under 3 - a toddler and twins that will be a year old tomorrow. When I first brought them home, it was just crazy trying to take care of them and keep my 3 year occupied - I couldn't even imagine another one in the mix!

I was just thinking this weekend that I was grateful God didn't grant my desire for twins. Life with triplets seems simply scary...Yikes!
