An Island Girl

For 6 months, when people asked me where I lived, I was able to say, "On the island."

I loved that.

I've always been such a beach girl. Not really sure how that happened, since I grew up in Pittsburgh.

But, put me on the sand and let me see those waves crashing in and time slows down for me.

I relax.

We spent our first night in our new house last night and it was LOUD.

You would probably laugh at me for saying that if you came to my neighborhood. We live far out from "town."

And I put town in quotes because it's a small town.

It's a quiet family neighborhood.

But, there are people around. Dogs bark. Child yell(who aren't mine). Cars drive past. There's no ocean breeze.

I heard the boys were awake and I went up to check on them. Bear was standing at his window and asked me, "Where did it go, Mommy?  The ocean. Where is it?"

Ahhh, buddy, I know, I know.

I never thought we'd get to live right on the beach, so I am going to stop whining and just be glad that we were able to for a little while....

PhotobucketBut, I still miss it.

Today is the last day of the semi-final round for the Baby Idol contest. The top 25 move on to the finals tomorrow. One vote per computer every 24 hours. Please help me and vote for Mason HERE.

Aww, this made me choke up a little...

I hope you and your boys can find something else to make you feel the way the ocean did...

maybe it'll pull you back...you never know!

Aw, poor guy. I'd be wondering where the ocean was too.

It was the opposite for us. We moved from the DC Metro area to NW Arkansas where the " biggest" airport around is in the middle of a cow pasture! But for us, we welcomed the quiet. You'll get used to the noise soon, I bet. Hope the move went smoothly!

Man, beach front home. I just don't know if I could give that up...hope the new place grows on you, though. It's hard living up to a beach house.

Bright side... you won't miss it during hurricane season. I always feel bad for the people on our island because they close the causeway and they either get out while the gettin' is good or they're stuck with taking their chances.

Okay, off to vote. I've been trying to remember everyday... I hope he wins! :)

I see quite a few beach trips in your future this summer!! You know what sounds I *don't* miss from my childhood? Animal noises. We lived across the highway from a ZOO, and those animals were LOUD! ;-)

I completely understand the beach thing. I have never lived right on it, but I remember how calming it was. When I lived in Hawaii (as a teenager) I often snuck off to the beach to get away from teenage stresses.

I understand what you mean. Even though I've never lived near the ocean (I'm a moutain girl :) I absolutely love it. The beautiful rore of the tides can totally put you to sleep. You make me miss it for you! :)

I love the beach too, somehow, since I'm from Upstate NY and "beach" isn't in the vocab. I am going on Memorial Day weekend, for the first time in 3 years that I've lived in NC. Crazy.. Not sure WHICH beach, but probably Wilmington. Do you have a suggestion other than that one? I'm coming from Raleigh so nothing TOO to far of a drive.

For real? You were living on the beach? Oh girl, there is nothing like it. Congratulations on your new home. And I am sorry you had to leave your island.

I am a Florida girl who has fallen asleep many a night to the pulse of the water's tides. It is the most soothing, glorious sound in the world and it constantly, constantly beckons to me. When I am away from our beloved gulf, I have my sound machine with my pretend waves.

And by the way, pray for our beautiful Gulf. Pray for the creatures of the sea that this oil can somehow be contained before it harms too many.

Sounds like Bear is going to take after his Mama...so cute!

Living by the beach is the best...once you've done it, you always want to go back. We were just talking today about getting a condo eventually (after I go back to work...yuck)! I need to be back there!!!

BTW...have you ever read this book?

You only really "get it" if you've lived at the beach...

Wow. What a treat to have been able to live on oceanfront property for awhile. I bet your children are going to love all of their new friends though. I can't wait to find out if Mason moves on.

Poor Bear! You can still go to the beach, right? But living right on it is so much better! No packing. You can just open the door and go.

I think it's the lack of good beaches that make Pittsburghers love them so much! I absolutely love the sand and waves.

I would miss it too.
Talking about it being loud...When I moved to Reno it took me forever to get use to the "loud" I had always lived in the country...there's no country in Reno!

I voted for the baby!!

Hang in there! Neighborhoods can be a good thing! Not as fun as being on the beach but good! Are there lots of kids? Hope so!

I bet it does feel loud! Some nights I wonder why the heck parents buy kids the nosiest car on the lot...and then let them drive them down the street...frustrating!
