The Old Motherbitch

I want to take a minute to thank all you fabulous comment-ers for your understanding yesterday and honesty in admitting that I'm far from being alone in occasionally experiencing mom-anger. I just ♥ you all! Though, after that, I'm going a little lighter and fluffier today.

Back at "home," I was about average age when compared to the moms of my boys' friends.

And at Monkey's old preschool, I was one of the "young" moms, at 32.

But, it's a different story down here.

I'm the OLD MOM.

Swiped from photobucket: I'm not that old- yet.

I was at a Stroller Strides class last week(exercise with your kids in tow- good in theory, but not with kids older than a baby) and two of the girls had on their "class t-shirts" from high school.

Class of 2007.

And the rest of the girls weren't much older.

I guess it shouldn't come as a surprise to me, since when I was pregnant with Monkey and living down here, I was teaching 5th grade...and a lot of the parents of my students were around my age(27), maybe just a little older.

I do remember that I was considered "old" to be having my first baby.

So, now I'm the old mama in my boys' playgroup.

I don't feel old.

32 isn't old.

But, these girls probably look at me like I'm ancient.

Or maybe they think I'm the old motherbitch.

Wait, they can't think that.

That's MY word.

Sadly all that is , is a statement of how far we as a society have slipped in expectations forour children. Kids today think having a bby as young as possible is the greatest thing sadly. I am 40 sooo technically I am wayyy older then you lol

I am not the old mom where my girls are concerned but OLD where my sons are concerned...it is no fun going to parental things for the boys I can tell you that much! Damn I might have had to roll my eyes or leave the class if I saw class shirts (or wear my own--1992, Respectively)

In my old neigbhorhood I was the young wife...and for a long painful period of the time, the childless one.

Now, I'm one of the OLDER wives (but not oldest, because this is Florida after all, home of the snowbirds and retired folks)and its sort of freaky. I'm not used to hanging with girls that are way younger than me. Weird....and our kids are the same age so I guess I'm the old mom too.

Oh well.

Some of the commenters upset me today... I am a young mother & I am a single mom - but that doesn't make me any less of a parent than anyone else. I am 23 with a 5yo...Def the youngest mom in my area - but I have always been the real mature one. All of my friends are older between 27 & 40. Age is just a number and it's about how you parent your children. I can't stand when people say mean or hurtful things about us young mommies (not saying you are...but others are.) It's like being sexist or racist. We are just as good as you gals are.

Ok - now to get off my soap box, whew I feel better, I dont think you are old AT ALL!

Oh man. I so relate. I'm 34. Which probably seems ancient to you. In our new small group at church, me and my Hubs are the "old" ones. Like, people are looking to us for leadership and wisdom and we're looking at each other thinking "oh man, if they only knew how clueless we are".

It seems in my area there is no 'average' age to have kids. There are women who look like they are in their 50's with kindergarteners, and girls who are barely 18 with kids in kindergarten. ?? We live in a small town, I dont think there is much else to do but make babies I guess.

Around here I actually feel like I'm in the minority. I'm kind of right in between... There's tons of moms who are either a lot older than me or a lot younger than me. I think I fit in more with the older crowd. At 26 I just don't have anything in common with an 18 year old... other than being a mom.

I'm going to have to jump into the bandwagon with this one. I'm 31 and just had a baby 3 months ago. I say, better to be an "old motherbitch" with her shit together, and very ready (financially and mentally) to be a MOTHER than a teen mom who miscalculated her ovulation days and now forced to change her plans forever.

When I was going to my birthing classes, I was one of the oldest moms (most moms there were 19-21--not joking). Guess what 98% of those moms were unmarried, and goig straight to welfare.

I don't mean to offend anyone, but when I was in this classes, these little girls were all: "you're old" I was all, "you're unwed, and poor."

Coming up on my twenty seventeenth birthday here. I was always a young mom (had my first at 18) and yeah, I have to agree with Manic Mommy, not all young mothers are irresponsible, drug addicted drop outs. My kids are better behaved and alot more socially adjusted than alot of kids in their class with older, two parent families...just sayin. :0)

And I was never on welfare.

Having said all that, I wouldn't consider you an "old" mother at all or a motherbitch!!!

I love love love your post!!! (Per usual) I think that's one of the things about living in the Dirty South; people have kids a lot earlier than in the Northeast. Here, I find a LOT of moms my age with kids already in 3rd or 4th grade. Fortunately, I've found other groups that have "professional" women who did the career thing for a few years before having kids, so they're closer to my age. But it seems like they're few and far between!

Most of the mothers here in my part of the dirty south are around my age. OLD! There are a few young mothers though. I think there are benefits to both having children early and later. But it all comes down to making good choices at any age. Different strokes for different folks. As long as they love their children and do right by them, it really doesn't matter. :)
