I promised myself that I wouldn't do it...

But, I did it.

I joined a "mommies" group down here.

Oh, God, it actually has the word "mommies" in its title.

While I love my boys calling me "mommy" and I cringe when Monkey occasionally calls me "mom" instead, I don't say, "Hi, I'm Shell and I'm a MOMMY!!!"

BLECH.

But, the reality of it is that groups like the one I joined are very good for info.

To be able to ask things like: Where are the good local parks? What's going on in the area this week? Where should I go get my hair did?

And have someone who knows the area be able to tell me.

Though I did live down here before, the friends that I have from here all live at least 45 minutes away, as we didn't move to the exact same area. Plus, they all have older kids...some of their kids practically my age, others with teenagers, and some with no kids.

So, I decided to suck it up and join a local moms' message board.

It's not like I actually have to go to any of the playdates or nights' out if I don't feel like it.

I can just chat on the board.

And, if there is any drama, I can delete my account and run.

Or, stay out of it, read it all, and silently mock.

I think it's great that you joined. Like you said, you can always run if you don't like it or there is a lot of drama. :)

Thanks for stopping by my blog! I am following you now! :)

I haven't had the best experiences with moms groups. They tend to be full of drama. But, I'm trying!

I vote for the lurking and mocking. I'm not into the Mom's Groups, either.

I agree that that's the way to join a Mom's group. There's one in my area, but you have to host meetings at your own house. I'm lucky we have the room for the people who actually live here!

Lurking and mocking is always fun! Good luck!

i didn't even know mom's groups existed until about 15 months after giving birth to my son - which makes sense - duh, that sounded stupid

to recover - i did end up joining one b/c i knew no one in the area and my family had essentially abandoned me and 7 years later they are my best friends on the planet - it was so worth it

but if it doesn't work out lurking is always a viable option

I did that when my kids were little and it was such a great experience. I'm glad you joined!

I found out several other preschool options that I didn't know about before, so that's helpful.

But, I'm still hesitant to jump right in and actually meet people because these groups tend to be a lot like junior high, with all their cliques.
