What to do???

All 3 of my little boys are sick.

Monkey not to the extent that the other two are, since he has some crazy-strong immune system and he's usually just the carrier of the plague, with no effect on him whatsoever.

The boys have low-grade fevers, snotty noses, and a little bit of a cough.

This is normally something I would wait out.

I'm not one to go running to the peds office every time one of my kids feels slightly off.

I would end up living there if I did that.

Plus, it seems like my kids end up catching something worse than they had originally had from the the waiting room/exam room.

So, unless it is a high fever that doesn't go away after a few days, a super high fever, or something that is making a child unrelentingly miserable, we wait it out.

But, all this talk of flu is making me very paranoid.

How do you know if what your child has is something that is severe enough to warrant a trip to the doctor?

Do you chance taking them to the doctor and then they end up catching something worse from all the germs floating around the office?

Help! How do you decide if they need to go to the doctor or if you can safely let it pass at home?

I usually call the ped and ask him what to do. Although he usually tells me to come in. Once I stayed in the car and asked them to call me on my cell phone from the reception desk when they were ready to see the kids so we didn't get sicker...that worked well.

Hope they are better soon!

If it's the flu their fever would be higher is my understanding. There's not much you can do for it anyway but wait it out. In TX if you have the flu they are just calling it the Swine Flu without testing for it. We have such a high incidence of it that they aren't bothering with the testing.

If you're concerned take them. Go with your gut instinct- usually it's right.

I'm not one to run to the pediatrician for everything either. It sounds like a cold, but with all this flu stuff, if you're really concerned, at least call the doctor. Our pediatrician usually says to try things at home first unless they get worse or are real bad to begin with.

Good luck and I hope they fell better soon!

Thanks, everyone. My gut instinct is to wait it out at home, that it's not anything serious at this point. All this talk of swine flu is just making me super paranoid.

I had the same dilemma this am. Mine was coughing all night long. No fever though so we are waiting it out. Our ped office is very busy right now. I was thinking he might end up even sicker if he went in.

It's hard to know the right thing to do isn't it?

Well, my older two are much better today. My youngest is still all boogery gross, but I think he'll be okay.

I'm really trying to keep them out of the peds office, knowing how many cases of the flu they have been dealing with.

This is my worst dilemma as a mom, when to haul them into that office! I'm so glad to read that they are feeling better.
