Twitter Don'ts : Are You Annoying People With Your Tweets?

If you are on twitter, and yes, you should be, you might notice people occasionally tweeting out their twitter pet peeves. One of the most common is "Don't auto-dm! It's spam and makes me unfollow you!" *

Another that was originally on my list but I saw tweeted out this weekend by @adventuroo was "If all you do is tweet out 'inspirational' quotes, I will never ever follow you. #thereisaidit"

But, like everything else, Twitter is a learning process and it's not like you know these things right off the bat, you have to figure it out as you go.

Here's my list of Twitter Don'ts to help you along:

Don't get mad and unfollow someone if they don't follow you back immediately.  It might take someone a few days to get caught up on twitter notification emails.  Or, sometimes twitter doesn't send them out for every person who follows.  TWEET with the person: talk to them and they'll probably follow you.

Don't just tweet "hey" or "good morning" to someone and be mad that that isn't enough to get them to follow you or even respond.  Spammers do that, too, so it's hard to tell you apart from the spammers.

Don't follow a bunch of people just hoping for return follows and then unfollow them all a day or two later.

Don't RT all day long.  It's really nice to RT an awesome tweet or link- you definitely should show some RT love. But, if this is all you do, you start looking a little a robot instead of a person.

Don't get spammy with your links: twitter is a great tool to get your blog posts out there. But, if you are tweeting out the same link 4 times in an hour, it's annoying.**

Unless you have something super important that you are tweeting, Don't add "pls rt" to the end of your tweets. People will RT if they like what you tweeted.  And by super important, I mean super important to everyone, not just you.

Don't get upset if no one replies to something you asked on twitter. Tweets go by quickly. You can ask again.  Just not 30 seconds after you first asked.

Don't be a twitter-stalker.  Twitter is one place where it's perfectly acceptable to jump right into someone else's conversation. But, if you jump into the same person's conversation every single time they are tweeting with someone else, it gets a little creepy.

Don't only talk to the same people all day, every day.  Yes, twitter is for interaction. And you'll get to know some people really well and want to talk to them more than others.  But, if someone views your profile page and all they see is you tweeting the same handful of people and no one else, you look clique-ish.  If you want to have a long conversation with someone that you know well, that is what Skype is for. #TGFS**

Don't forget that a tweet is forever.  So, don't start a fight or say something hateful that you are going to regret later. Don't send something out as a tweet that you meant as a dm.  Even though you can delete your tweet, if it was that big of a screw up of a tweet, chances are, it's already been retweeted, repeatedly.  #thinkbeforeyoutweet

Are we following each other on twitter? @shellthings

Do you have any Twitter Don'ts to add to this list?

*I found out on twitter from @OhMariana yesterday that you can OPT OUT OF GETTING AUTO DMs! Or at least, quite a lot of them. Yes, this is news exciting enough to yell at you in caps. How to Opt Out of Auto DMs.

**I tweet celeb gossip links as part of my job about 5-10 times a day total. And hope it doesn't violate this rule.

***Thank God for Skype: credit to  @akludgymom for that hashtag

Great list! My top pet peeve is just the 4 tweets of the same thing, all in a row, by the same person. Annoying!

Great list! I think you hit all of my pet peeves, especially the "please RT" one. Oh I also don't like when people beg for readers, followers, fb likes. If you have to beg there's a problem.

HA! The tweet about the inspirational quotes made me laugh. I don't follow those either. And, the pls RT's are annoying as well.

Great list!

I hate when i see multiple tweets of the same thing in a row. I realize people are probably updating FB and elsewhere, and it's automatic, but if you update somewhere else, you should only have one automatic post to twitter...not THREE.

I agree about asking Pls RTs. It is up to others to decide.

And I had no idea there was a way to opt out! Heading there now.

Thank you Shell for this important public service post! I'll be the first to admit what a rookie I am. Now, I realize why some things on twitter irk me. I hope I haven't been a pain to my twitter buds. BTW, I thank you for that informative retweet about #Bloggybootcamp #Boston. You made my day.

I forgot about the tweeters that recycle the same 4 tweets. I think that is annoying. Get some new stuff!

Well I had the multiple tweet thing going with my blog and I have yet to figure out how to stop blogger and networked blogs to stop tweeting out at the same time.. any one have a clue??

Thanks for the list! It's great!

I hope that I don't violate any of the rules! I do like one about adding pls RT on your message. I'm not going to RT if I haven't read it ... if it's worth it then I'll share it!

I'm having a hard time getting into Twitter at all. It honestly sometimes feels like it would be a full time job to become someone noticed on Twitter. I seriously do not understand how people are on it all day.

Also, trying to network I made my twitter public. Now I have a stream that moves so fast, I have no idea who anyone is and can't possibly keep up, let alone form relationships.

Sorry for my Twitter whine, maybe I'm just not a Twitter girl.

I think you hit all my pet peeves, too.

I have no problem with your tweets about your job or people Tweeting links to their posts. When you do nothing but tweet self promoting links, chances are I won't follow.

March 14, 2011 at 8:53 AM
Blogger Amanda @ It's Blogworthy said...

I agree with all of these. The thing I hate most is when people follow and then unfollow me right away, especially those who are REAL people with whom I could build a friendship. If they seem interesting, I'll follow back -- I'm not a snob about it or anything -- so that's why it annoys me so.

You know, one of my BIGGEST pet peeves (besides the follow thing) is when people ask to be RTed. DONT' 'ASK!! If it's good, people will RT. You can never tell what's going to strike someone's fancy enough to RT. The other night I tweeted something random and it got RT a TON. i was thinking, I wish I'd had that kind of exposure on a blog ;)

I usually tweet new post links at 10, 12 3:30 and once in the evening, like around 7 or 8. If it's a good one, I might add one more in there somewhere. that's been a good balance for me.

Oh Shell. The wise one. P.s. People shouldn't wait for a follow back from me. I domt do it automatically. Ima twitter bitch like that. The reason is, tho, I like to be interactive & just can't keep up if the list is so big.

Great, great list!!! I agree with all of them especially the one about talking to the same people all the time (subject of my post today, as you know) AND the one about asking to be RT'ed. I've written many times, begging people NOT to send auto-DMs. Alas, people don't listen.

Awesome post, Shell! I agree with everything. I try to use my Please RT's wisely. Believe it or not, tho, research by Dan Zarrella shows that it works to include that in tweets. A lot.

Great list, Shell! I had no idea we can opt out of those auto DM's. Although, I have to admit, I'm too lazy to bother unfollowing! I love meeting people on Twitter. I do tweet my posts a couple of times a day, but then I worry that I'm being annoying. It's a delicate balance! Thanks for this!

I totally RT'd this. :-)

Whenever people ask me about why I interact with people the way I interact with them on Twitter, I talk about my "Twitter is a big ass cocktail party" (and yes, I use it that way because I like to type big ass cock" in consecutive keystrokes). There are tidbits of conversation all over the place - grab onto something interesting just be a leaf on the wind :-)

The one that really drives me nuts: Tweeting multiple times a day your links to old blog posts. Especially when I click on it to find that I already read the post 6 months ago. There is nothing wrong with giving old posts another chance every now and then but at some point readers want new stuff.

Great tips! One of my biggest pet peeves goes along with #1. The people who follow/unfollow/repeat so they continually show up in your new followers stream. They continue to do this until you follow back. Annoying!

I fail so bad at Twitter. I can never think of anything witty to say so I just don't. Although I will definitely ask questions or jump in on conversations - you probably won't find me posting any super-awesome quotes or anything.

Good post! I mostly use Twitter to promote my blogs and my articles, however I am always worried about being too spammy. I only RT tweets that I think are important, and I don't chit chat back and forth with people through twitter like some do. If I think the people I follow are annoying and always spamming, I will unfollow them, easy as that. If people don't like my tweets, they are free to unfollow me as well. I do get quite a few hits from Twitter though, so I must not be doing TOO bad, lol.

I like the one about not tweeting the same people over and over again, every day...it does look cliquish. There are a few bloggers that I follow, and they tweet each other all day every day, and I can't help but feel left out. Like I'm in middle school again or something...lol

Thanks, Shell!

Great advice, Shell! I'm still struggling to become comfortable on Twitter so I listen more than I talk and then I worry that it seems that all I do is RT and promote my own posts. Don't want to do that but honestly it's hard to figure out where to jump in and then what to say! I'm just better at (written) chatter than I am at conversation! ... That's kind of sad isn't it?

There's a really great way to avoid all Twitter annoyances....simply don't tweet. :)

I need to get on Twitter more often. Now that I have tweetdeck it is so much easier but usually tweet in the evening. Do you have it up on your computer during the day?

I've secretly been sitting here, annoyed, watching various people including "Pls RT" at the end of every other tweet. Drives me crazy but I don't feel like I know them well enough to say anything - and I probably wouldn't even if I did know them better.

Also, I had no idea that anyone expected a follow in return for following me. Well that explains a lot...!

OMG- that inspiration quote thing? I swear I was just thinking that before I clicked on your post. I probably someone once a week for that offense. Because they usually do it in blocks right? Think of your own stuff to say!

The Pls RT drives me absolutely insane. Also, the link-spamming. I think I had a very similar list a few months back, and still, nothing changes. Why, people, why?? The auto-dms are like torture. Please make it stop!

Thank you! Twitter should pay you for this and then post it under FAQ.

Great post and I have to agree on all items. Twitter definitely has a learning curve to it, so this is a great tool for people still figuring it out!

I have a "friend" who has a borderline Twitter stalker. My "friend" has had to run from Twitter on many occasions. My "friend" wonders if there's a such thing as a Twitter restraining order. ;)

Great list, Shell!

Can we add "nothing but political tweets" to the list?
Even if I do agree with your political stance, I'm on Twitter to socialize. Stop trying to force feed me propaganda!
