Wild Things

The preview I just saw for the dvd that is coming out tomorrow is all sweetness and light: playing around, hugs, fun music: Be warned- that is NOT an accurate view of the movie! That's why I'm playing along with Messy Mommy's Movie Monday. You need to be warned!
Movie Monday @ Messy Mommy

I thought this would be a timely review to do, since this movie is coming out on dvd tomorrow and many of you might be wondering if it is appropriate for your children to watch. My 3- and 5-year-olds and I saw Where the Wild Things Are in the theater just two weeks ago. The theaters around here give free movie passes to some of the schools in the area on days when the kids have off for school holidays, to a children's movie that is a few months old.

Mil volunteered to watch Cub so that I could take the other two with me to go see it.

Monkey had seen the previews and had asked to go see it and of course, both boys were familiar with the book.

I was a little skeptical. The previews looked little scary(though NOT the one that I just saw!!!) and the movie is rated PG.
Now, I do let my boys watch PG movies, but I've found that for the movie theater, we're usually safe with a G-rated, as far as holding their attention, but PG-rated are better off as a dvd at home.

But, since the tickets were free and Grandma even gave the boys some popcorn and soda money, I thought we'd give it a shot, figuring we could always leave and it really wouldn't be any big loss.

I thought it was actually a great adaptation of the book to the movie.

But, I do think that it was a little too mature for my boys.

There are some scary scenes. In the book, the monsters are almost cute.

They are not cute in the movie.

When the monsters in the movie want to eat Max, it's frightening.

There's also a lot of dark and fast-moving scenes, which are a bit overwhelming. It probably won't seem quite as bad at home, though, unless your tv screen is THAT big.

Bear had to cover his ears several times because there were quite a few loud scenes.

There was a scene where they have a huge mud fight and both of my boys were laughing almost uncontrollably at that, though.

I do think that you could watch this movie with your child and take a lesson from it on how you should treat others and how to behave when you don't get your way, but I think that Monkey, at 5, is probably the youngest that I would have watch this movie.

And keep in mind that he's 5-going-on-22.

So, if you are thinking about this movie for toddlers or even preschoolers, you might want to reconsider.

Older than that, I'll give it my thumbs up.

Did you see it? What did you think?

Will you be renting it on dvd?

Have a movie you want to review? Head over to Messy Mommy's blog and link up!

Kiran, over at Masala Chica, whom I cannot wait to meet on Saturday at Bloggy Bootcamp, is travelling like crazy this week and so I had a guest post over at her place yesterday.

Please don't forget to head over there and show me some love so she doesn't regret letting me guest post. It was a Sunday and you know Sundays are sort of dead in the blog world.  But, what a bad impression that would be - to have almost no comments on it- when we're meeting irl soon.

She might act like she doesn't know me.

I'll go comment over there as soon as I leave here. :)

You're going to Bloggy Boot Camp? Wonderful!

I've heard no positive, glowing reviews on the movie so I probably won't rent it. :(

I just put this on my netflix que for hubby and I.

My son loves the book so I would hate to ruin that for him by making him recall scary images from the movie while reading for bedtime.

Maybe in a few years...

I haven't seen it yet but I'd like to. My son is still too young for movies, but it was one of my favorite books growing up.

A friend of mine took her 7 year old to see it and said it was good but her son may not have been old enough for it.

Thanks for the review. I might let my daughter watch it, but I'm not sure about my 4 year old.

I've heard several bad reviews on this movie. I actually heard it was depressing? Our little boy loves the book, but after the reviews we decided not to take him to see it at the theater. It is in our Netflix queue. I think I'll watch it first and decide if I think he's ready for it. Thanks for the review!

We took our two girls aged 8 and 6 to see it and I thought it was a bit overwhelming for them at times. Our youngest was scared and sat in my lap the whole time. But I loved the music.

We didn't go see it in the theaters because I thought it looks a lil scary evern with the previews - I think we will just rent this movie, even though Mister Monster is 5, I think this is to mature for him. And our TV Is 60" that close to theater size right? Haha! No quite! :) Have a great day...and have you been to Amber & I's birthday Celebration? Make sure to check it out:

Yeah. I wasn't too excited about the previews for that one either. But last night, we watched G-Force! Very entertaining! I love it when kid movies have "inside jokes" for the parents & this one had plenty.

My twins are 4 and the previews alone made me cringe at the thought of taking them. I think we'll wait at least another year (although I'd like to see it for myself as we all love the book).

Heading over to see your guest post!

Over a span of many, many years, I have seen more movie trailers/preview/reviews that are at best misleading and at worst, downright false! So I just avoid the whole things and stay home, read the book, blog, and play computer games!

I really wanted to take Otter to this but everyone said it was too scary so I didn't. His dad let him watch Dark Knight (didn't know that at the time) so I'm pretty sure he could've handled this. Oh well.

Yeah, it looked scary...I am the idiot who took the kids to see A Christmas Story. All of them mind you. And Brady (the 3 year old) sat for the first 10 minutes with his hands over his eyes, then the next 5 screaming I want to go home. Keegan (5 year old) chimed in he was scared too, then the baby spilled my diet coke all over him. Uh, we left... have fun this weekend.

Thanks for the review. I love to hear a parent's perspective. And I'm with you. I prefer watching when I have a pause button on a lot of these "kids" movies, but it is fun to go once in a while! :)

I was thinking my oldest may want to watch it but then again, he's always been pretty impressionable with scary stuff in kids' movies. The witch in Snow White gave him bad dreams.
We may just stick with the book for a few years yet.

Thanks for the review... I was wondering about this one. My boys have seen some PG-13 (Harry Potter and such), but they both have a very good handle on real vs. actors playing a part. I was curious if it was a good book-to-movie movie. ;)

Yes, I'll be renting this movie for my 5 & 8 year old. Although taking them to the theater to see it (even at the cheap $1 theater) wasn't something I wanted to do after reading some of the reviews that shown it in a little-too-complicated-for-children's-minds kinda light, not to mention a bit scary. I PERSONALLY have a huge interest in the film.. so I'll probabaly netflix it -- screen it with the hubs and decide then if the kids would like it. Much like we did with Marley & Me... and very glad we did!!!

We will definitely rent it. Movie theaters make things more overwhelming for kids I think. I remeber I took my oldest two who where 6 and 3 at the time to see Tarzan- I'm thinking Disney movie, how bad could it be? The opening scene were they get attacked and the mother gets killed yeah, Brielle (3) climbed into my lap face down and stayed that way til the movie was over. :(

Agreed. We rushed our kids to the movie theatre when it first came out. I felt bad for my toddler that was covering her eyes until we just took her out. The movie is just pretty dark for the age group they seem to be targeting.
