The Beach: Before and After Kids

We spent yesterday afternoon on the beach with our boys... and a couple who is expecting their first child.  I couldn't help but giggle when I thought about the differences between a beach trip pre-kids and a beach trip post-kids.

Well, I giggled and then I felt a little jealous.

Packing for a day at the beach

Pre-kids: Not much needed but your suit, sunscreen, and a towel.  You might add a beach chair, a book, games like horseshoe or cornhole.  Cooler of beer and snacks.

Post-kids: Suits for all kids, changes of clothes for all kids.  Every beach towel you own.  Sand toys, beach balls, floaties, water toys.  Cooler of water and juice boxes. Kid-friendly snacks.  Sunscreen. Swim diapers.  Regular diapers and baby wipes. The camera. Cell phone in case you need to call 911.  Baby powder to remove sand.  At least three bags to carry all of it in, plus a trash bag to collect all the mess afterwards. Don't bother with a chair because you probably won't sit down.

Activities at the beach

Pre-kids:  Reading, napping, chatting with friends, playing games, casual stroll along the beach, swimming.

Post-kids:  Keeping all kids from drowning or taking off down the beach.  Digging giant holes in the sand.  Non-stop counting of kids to be sure you have them all.  Jumping in the waves. Running down the beach.  Making sandcastles.  Doling out snacks and drinks.  Reapplying sunscreen to small backs and faces about 10 times during the afternoon.  Remembering whose towel is whose. Remembering whose shovel is whose.  Playing every possible beach game.  Talking to friends while not looking at them because your eye is on your children.

After the beach

Pre-kids: Going for a swim at the pool and then taking a shower.  Going out to dinner.  Relaxing.

Post-kids: Convincing the kids that yes, we will go back to the beach, so it's okay to leave.  Loading up the minivan.  Quick and easy dinner, but not out somewhere nice because those kids are TIRED.  Hosing off the kids at the house.  Bedtime for kids. Parents pass out before they can even bother getting showers.

Beach days with my boys are a blast and I wouldn't give them up to go back to those pre-kids days. Though we will make it a point to have Grandma watch the boys a few days this summer so that Hubs and I can do the beach in pre-kids style!

so very true. I love when single or no kids friends say just come.. it will not be that long of a day or something like that. I think I am freakin tired before we leave.. and with kids it doesn't matter if your gone for 1 day or a week you have to bring the same amount of stuff :)

Happy Monday!!

I wouldn't trade the mess for anything, but yes, it was a lot easier pre-kids!

At one point, my trunk was always covered with a fine white sheen from all the powder and de-sanding!

Glad you had fun! We always stay away on holiday weekends, but with school out in 9 days, we'll be there lots!

Sounds EXACTLY how our day went yesterday & the hubs and I were discussing the differences between pre-kids and post-kids as well! We slept great last night after a busy day & I'm sure you did the same! I had the same idea as well about hitting the grandparents up to watch the kids one day this summer so hubs & I can go to the beach with just our bathing suits & towels & remember the good ol' days! Ha!

I, too, never knew of the baby powder phenomenon. Can't wait to try it!

This post was totally SPOT ON. I feel like a member of the Griswald family (of Lampoon's fame) whenever I schlep the entire contents of our home to the beach. Shame.

EXACTLY. It's like plane trips before and after kids. Once it was a time to read magazines and nap. Now it's time for non-stop activity and snack distribution.

That's too funny! You don't appreciate the ease of "pre-kids" until you have the kids and are now aware of the error of your ways! We never appreciate it until its gone!! You list made me giggle...we don't have a beach, but the pool outing is very similar. What once was relaxing and soaking up some sun is now A LOT OF WORK!

One thing we always forget but need at the beach with kids is cash for ice cream. I never carry cash, but the beach only accepts cash. Pre-kids, I'd say no problem. With kids, my lack of cash for the ice cream man is painful on the ears.

I went to the beach with my parents the other week, and there were a good many parents there with their kids. School isn't out yet, so there weren't too many, but you're absolutely right. You could tell a big difference in beach activities between the adults on their own vs. the adults with children. Little kids were running full-force into the ocean squealing at the tops of their lungs with their mom or dad scurrying behind after them. It was actually quite amusing. I think that, but wait until I have one of my own. Beach trips will be very different then. Glad you had a good time, though! Kids can make trips really interesting.

Years ago when my oldest were 2 and newborn we went to the beach with my husband's childhood best friend and his new girlfriend.

It was a nightmare. When it became evident that our two little ones had had enough we announced that we should be getting ready to go- she decided to go on one last walk to collect shells and then returned over an hour later! An hour with two young cranky children at the beach is an eternity.
She then insisted on eating at a very not kid friendly restaurant and then insisted we stop at a drugstore on the way home to get some aloe for her sunburn!
Your post brought back those horrible memories of that awful day!! :)
Luckily my husband's friend is now happily engaged to a much more considerate girl.

I have 3 kiddos too (8, 4 1/2, 1 1/2) and - although we don't live close to the beach - I feel your pain as it relates to a swimming pool! My favorite part of your post... Non-stop counting of kids to be sure you have them all. LOL! At the pool this "keeping track concept," is even worse! Because one of our kids is in the baby pool, one is in the shallow end, and the other is going off the diving board in the deep end! Keeping track of them all is CRAZY!

Loved reading this. I think I'll subscribe :)

The pool post in my head is kind of similar...except I was going to throw something in about my bikini top being used as a life preserver and everyone at the pool getting a nice shot of my A-cup boob.

Ain't that the truth??? We took the kids to the beach awhile back (I think I blogged about it) and it was anything but relaxing!!!!!!

What a perfect day, for the kids! I'm always amazed at how much planning goes into a simple day out.

I'm a little paranoid taking all of my kids to the water. We were at a lake beach today and my 15-month-old kept bolting for the water every time I put him down!

I think it's a great idea to have someone else along to watch the kids so you and the hubs can enjoy some quality stress-free time alone, too. But I have to say: the pictures of the kids at the beach are way too precious. XOXO
